the storm will come north and take a right turn and scrape the florida panhandle. so many are under tropical storm warnings including us here tonight at pensacola beach. this is a tropical storm and that's three to five feet of surge. this is an area not protected by the levee system that protects new orleans. let me show you what they've been doing today. you can see the big surf behind me here. even with the storm offshore the waves come first. life guards have been keeping people out of the water as the waves continue to grow. they have been trying to se w up anything they can on the beach. we ex expect 15 to 65 miles per hour winds here. this is the track and the timing. plaquemines parish around sunday, 1:00 in the morning. so it will be an overnight landfall there. then again, there's the right turn taking it towards pensacola beach probably sunday at 1:00. a lot of the wet weather will be on the east side of the storm mostly in the florida panhandle, but there will be that surge component. the most dangerous part of any tropical system. >> jim, we'll keep an

the sea surface temperatures are higher in the southern gulf than as the storm nears the florida panhandle. the water temperatures, while very warm are not what they were a month ago. we have had cool nights as we are now in early october. the tropical storm 65, another ten miles an hour. we will crank it up to a category one. about 500 miles west southwest of miami. we think miami will completely miss this storm. it'll be north florida toward tallahassee over through pensacola. even in southern alabama. you can see some of the computer models, a bit of a spread with this but most of them put it east of new orleans, west of tallahassee and that will ba hound the florida panhandle -- likely to weaken back to a heavy rain this is over maryland into early next week. remember that the heavy intensity, a lot of these -- right into the chesapeake bay area. tonight down to 60 and tomorrow just another hazy day, even warmer, i don't know if quite the 86 but mid80s tomorrow. you see what happens, the next several days, more partly cloudy and warm. summer like pattern here. right into the second par

it looks like it will make landfall between louisiana and the florida panhandle. we had one tropical storm andrea. but this could make it up to a hurricane level. watch this as it makes that landfall likely saturday night. the hurricane hunters are coming off furlough for this. it looks like fema is being recalled from furlough already in anticipation of this system. also because we have the strong winds and the storm looks like it will intensify we have hurricane watches up. you can see this especially for alabama, mississippi, and part of the florida panhandle. that means by tomorrow we could start seeing some of those hurricane conditions, some of those strong winds moving in even in anticipation of the landfall. this is something that we'll watch very closely as we head towards the weekend. you can see the clouds shields in parts of florida. besides that the coast is moist recently. we'll really get moist thanks to the tropical system today and tomorrow. that's not even our only system. in the midwest we have this broad area. we have a disturbance and some of

one last month, one in the last few weeks in a prison in the florida panhandle. this is that prison, or i was able to manipulate the prison -- moments ago -- at any rate this is a prison in the florida panhandle and right in the center of it, in a very sparsely populated area, just before you get to franklin county, so if you good north here in georgia and alabama, good to the east, the point is they could be anywhere. the first guy got out back in september when the court clerk's office received bogus documents that reduced to life sentence to 15 years. while investigating that case the state attorney's office learned that a second killer got out using the exact same trick. and then, those fake court orders included forged signatures from prosecutors. along with the signature of a judge you just might recognize, judge perry, who oversaw the infamous murder trial of casey anthony. the judge says there's no way that 0 these guys acted on their own. >> somebody had to help them. they alone could not do this in franklin. >> there is a jail somewhere -- >> i think so

sand and get them out of the surge zone. 48 hours ago we were all from louisiana into the florida panhandle looking at the potential of a minimum hurricane at land fall and 48 hours ago you have to make those preparations. so festivals and things like that, the triathalon is shutdown. it's still a beautiful time to be at the beach and the best kept secret because the summer masses are gone and you can come down here and have the beach to yourself but there were thousands of people on the beach yesterday. the problem was rip currents. that will continue to be the problem today. it will be another nice beach day. this thing is barely hanging on to tropical storm status. i expect wind and rain from louisiana into the florida panhandle and eventually, sure, some of that moisture will get pulled up ahead of the front and make it's way all the way up the eastern seaboard. so the continued humidity there is absolutely expected. so i don't think i've ever seen a low level swirl as well defined as this one has sitting in the gulf of mexico. it looks like a pacific system you would see where it goes

people who live from new orleans to the florida panhandle are getting ready. boats out of the water, securing homes and getting supplies. heavy rain definitely on the way. the tropical storm is gaining strength and could grow to a category one hurricane by the time it arrives. dangerous wind and flooding downpours are expected as tropical storm karen moves to the shore. >> let's get the latest from jim dickey at accu-weather. >> reporter: good morning, here's karen sitting right in the middle of the gulf of mexico here drifting slowly to the north and northwest. we are expecting the storm to make a turn to the north and east. generally stay around the intensity it is now. likely staying a tropical storm. it could potentially reach minimum hurricane force but likely then reaching tropical storm force again. as it makes landfall you will deal with sheer and dry air. that will keep it fairly weak but some soaking rainfall to the gulf coast and the northeast through the weekend. john and diana, back to you. >> all right. jim dickey, thank you for that. >>> while t

watching and warnings extend from louisiana to the florida panhandle right now. currently tropical storm karen is moving closer and still more than 200 miles of the howard street -- south of mississippi. a state of emergency has been declared. >>> how called karen impact our weather? tim williams is tracking that. >> good afternoon. they do go through a bit of transition from time to time. so karen while it's still a tropical storm as of the 11:00 update the winds have been knocked back from 65 to 52 miles per hour. still in tropical storm stratus. it's still expected to get its act together and become a category 1 hurricane at some point before making land fall tomorrow afternoon into the evening. then it starts to make its way into our region. all the models have it moving in our general direction. it will lose its characteristics as a tropical storm. we'll still have all a of moisture associated with it and that rain is going to move into our region. it's much needed. we will get that rain without all the problems. right now we're looking at still another warm

not far from here near the panhandle, crews had to respond to a tree that blew down in the road. it took a couple hours to chop that up and get it out of the street. also in potrero hill some construction scaffolding was blown into power lines by these strong winds so another mess over there that first responders had to deal with. farther north dramatic video out of napa county. two people driving in a truck when a tree blew down on the truck. those people inside lucky indeed. they are both okay. only minor injuries. neither one had to go to the hospital. no doubt they are thankful for that. meantime, also in napa county a wild fire continues to race on the eastern shore of lake berryessa, at one point this fire was more than 500 acres. crews have gotten somewhat of a handle on it, about 75% contained and been able to shrink the size down to about 375 acres so that is good news. they have been battling these winds all night, all morning long. back at pier 39 you see the winds don't let up. it's not even wind gusts. it's sustained winds and that's why a lot of people are smelling

but the landfall looks like it's going to be the florida panhandle sunday night. so conditions are starting to deteriorate here as well. winds are sustained at 95 kilometers an hour. it's moving north-northwest at 17 kph. you'll be getting a great deal of rain from this. the areas in the red, 200 millimeters-plus. at the moment it's all coming down over the water, but as it nears, you'll start to feel the very heavy showers coming in pretty much along a very good portion of the coast. our next storm is going to be a little bit different. we have snow to the back of it. and severe thunderstorms to the front. here it is. heavy snow from the dakotas, right down into colorado. you can see about 30 centimeters of snow. to the east of that front line, it's going to be severe. some heavy rain, maybe even 50 millimeters when all is said and done, enough to cause some flooding. and there's also the potential for tornadoes. there was one that touched down in the last couple of hours. so you'll need to watch out for these conditions. on friday, the temperatures will be comin

joseph jenkins walked out of the franklin correctional institution in the florida panhandle. he was serving a life sentence for a 1998 murder. charles walker walked out of the same jail 10 days later on october 8th. he was serving a life sentence for a 1999 murder. but authorities didn't realize the men were released by mistake until tuesday. both pleading for the men to turn themselves in. >> i know who you are. your family knows knows who you are and we want to you return home safely. we love you. we believe in you. you we want you to surrender yourself. >> i am asking that you, joseph jenkins turn yourself into the nearest appropriate authority so we can end this episode of our lives. >> walker's mother says they spent the whole week after his released. walker appeared in public places and even going before his church last sunday. meanwhile jenkins family says they traveled six hours to pick him up from jail. the first stop was grandma's house and then jenkins disappeared. a no show at his own birthday party on october 1st. orange county police say the families made no att

south of us a little rain just beginning to show up in the florida panhandle the track from karen, somewhat now, you kind of shorten as it may reach as far north as south carolina before it dissipates it may not even get to the coast as a tropical storm. really sheered by a lot of west, southwest breezes, a lot of dry air in it, this storm has not increased in fact it has decreased in intensity. to the west of us there is a cold front. shower activity out there. moves in our direction we have two things headed our way some of this tropical moisture may be on monday the front also coming through the area on monday. we do have a chance at least of getting decent rain over the next 7 days weekend will be dominated by a very warm condition, high pressure over the area. there is a look at karen tonight. most activity has displaced east, northeast of the scepter and in fact, -- center and in fact it has been really sheered, not increased in intensity. showers this afternoon, north of us, one or two, not too far from philadelphia, one showing up southwest pa you may see clouds but do not expect to
