eddie daniels arrived here alone, chained, and terrified to serve 15 years for -r sabotage. >> initiallyt was very bad. it was 24 hour silence and all we had in our cells was a mat, one mat, we had three blankets, very thin, and dirty. and it was cold, cold, cold. we slept with all our clothes on. >> reporter: on eddie daniels' third day he had an encounter that changed his life. >> i saw this big man standing in front of me and i looked up and saw it was nelson mandela i said "good afternoon, mr. mandela." he said "the name is nelson. welcome." so we became friends. >> reporter: for 18 of the 27 years he spent in prison, nelson mandela walked down this corridor everyday and at the end of this walk there was no freedom, there was this. an eight foot square cell with a mattress on the floor for his bed and a bucket for a toilet. mandela was allowed one visitor a year for half an hour. mandela and daniels were among 30 political prisoners isolated in what was simply called "b" block. >> we sat on the brick. >> reporter: mandela and his fellow inmates worked long days in the yard sitting on

my three kids were there, my wife, with the mandelas, with eddie daniels. hogan, all these men and women -- and so all these people, the i have to say we were -- because they'd given us complete freedom. no one at any point said "you must do this. you must do that." they knew it was going to be a raw interpretation. they knew it was going to be flaws and all so their response meant everything to us. >> rose: when you came to the united states as an actor you worked on voice, yes? >> yes, constantly for about four years. >> rose: i know you did. project learns that detectives harry malugani and doug johnson were interrogating eddie lowery the very same day daniel connection with another rape, a rape with a similar m.o. in the same neighborhood. >> and here they have lowery where there's no evidence where he's guessing at details that they're feeding him, and they know all this information. i mean it's inexcusable. >> both the individual officers involved in the case and the department itself declined repeated requests for interviews or a statement of any sort. on january 28th, 2010, nypd detectives along with agents of the kansas bureau of investigation knock on the door of daniel brewer. he's arrested for the 1981 rape of the 74-year-old woman and the rape of another woman in ogden three months prior. on july 15th, 2011, brewer pleads guilty. it's taken 30 years. but eddie lowery believes a crooked case has finally been made straight. >> and i'll never understand all this -- why this all happened and all that stuff. you know, but, you know, the whole thing is coming around full circle. >>> coming up, lowery's reunion with the daughter who was
