. >> reporter: the astronauts rick mastracchio and michael hopkins has removed a faulty pump needed ton the space station. >> i got it. >> nice work, rick. >> reporter: a new pump was supposed to be installed today but will now be delayed until tomorrow after potential problems with his space suit was discovered saturday. >> the only issue that i personally is having here, it's very, very cold. >> one of the suits showed maybe a sign that it got a lit water into the evaporator on the back, on the flash evaporator which cools the suit when you're outside. >> reporter: nasa says the astronaut wasn't in danger and that the issue with the space suit isn't related to what happened in july. that's when italian astronaut nearly drowned after water leaked into his helmet. a reminder of the dangerous nature of the work being done 220 miles above earth. >> astronaut is off structure. >> reporter: the recent hit movie "gravity" puts a highly dramatized science fiction spin on the risks of space work, risks every astronaut on every mission understands. >> the movie "gravity" is a good movie but yo

. >> reporter: over the weekend, astronauts mike hopkins and rick mastracchio removed the faulty coolingsize of a refrigerator. they now must install the new one. their task is a delicate one. the equipment contains a noxious cooling fluid, ammonia. >> some of the danger is hooking up the big, heavy ammonia lines. they're thick and massive. hooking those up, of course, if you were to leak ammonia, it's not a pleasant chemical. you couldn't bring it inside. there's definite risk out there. >> reporter: mastracchio will be wearing a new cooling suit during his walk. >> the only issue i'm personally having is i'm very, very cold. i have very, very good air flow in my boots but my toes are quite cold. >> reporter: nasa says there was never any danger to the astronaut, after five hours of meticulous work from mastracchio and hopkins on saturday, day one of the space walk is being called a success. >> i think i'm ready to leave this work site. >> okay, copy that, rick. >> reporter: nasa hopes by christmas all the work will be done, leaving the astronauts to celebrate safely back on the space s

astronauts rick mastracchio and mike hopkins will spend about 20 hours in space removing the 780-poundracchi much of the time will be dangling from the robotic arm. nasa learned a lot from a similar incident back in 2010 that's given them confidence this time. >> i looked around the room today and said, "what are people worried about" and really there was not much to be said so i think we're ready to go out the door on saturday. >> reporter: a valve inside the pump failed over a week ago. complicating matters, nasa has to watch the crew's space suits. back in july, astronaut luka parmitano's helmet began mysteriously filling with water, scary moments as other crew members raced to get his helmet off. nasa doesn't completely understand what went wrong. this will be the first walk since. >> whole days have been spent with a lot of water chemists trying to figure this out. we have not said it would be something complete wide. >> reporter: space agency officials don't expect the problem to repeat but they are taking no chances. water absorbing pads have been installed in space suit helmets
