you can find the commonwealth club on the internet at commonwealthclub.org. i am alan auerbach, professor of economics and law at california berkeley and your moderator for this evening's program. i am delighted to introduce my friend and colleague, dr. edmund phelps. he was the 2006 nobel laureate in economics and is the author of many books including a one called "mass flourishing: how grassroots innovation created jobs, challenge, and change". this book examines modern economics and what makes nations prosper and why the sources of that prosperity are under threat today. edmund phelps teaches economics and is director of the center on capitalism and society at columbia university. he has long studied the sources of economic growth and the causes of unemployment. on announcing his nobel prize the prize committee specifically cited his work on key trade offs in economics between inflation and unemployment and current versus future generations. he is also known for the breadth of his approach to economic drawing as he does in this book important contributions

the governor's office took pains to point out that the taxpayers of the commonwealth of virginia were not going to be on the hook for this lavish wedding. they made it clear that the governor and his family were picking up the tab personally, even though it was happening at the governor's mansion. turns out that was not true. after inquiries from "the washington post," governor bob mcdonnell's spokesman revised that initial statement to say, actually, that governor mcdonnell was not paying for all of the expenses for his daughter's wedding. she and her fiance, themselves, were picking up some of the cost. specifically, the governor's office said, the daughter and her fiance would be picking up the cost of the chicken dinner. governor mcdonnell did not pay for the catering. his daughter paid for the catering. and by his daughter paying for the catering, turns out what they actually meant was that the daughter accepted as a gift a payment from one of her father's campaign contributors, which is what actually covered the cost of that very nice catered chicken dinner. it was weird, right?
