for the top story tonight, reaction first up, joining us from washington, marco rubio, the senator from florida your mind, senator, what is the biggest mistake that president obama is making? >> well, i think the biggest mistake is a lack of focus on robust economic growth and that's coupled with, of course, government that continues to spend more money than it has. and these two things, i think, are what is creating the state of the union now which is insecure. a growing number of americans are insecure about their economic future and the leading reason for that is our economy is not growing in a dynamic way. it's not creating enough of those middle income, middle class jobs that for so long have been the backbone of our country and what makes it special. >> but we have spent hundreds of billions of dollars in stimulus sending money to certain areas of the economy too try to create jobs and to try to get the economy in a growth mode. hasn't obama done what he should do in that area or hasn't he done enough or what? >> first of all, if you recall, when he first took office, his number one prior

and in a sign of how any new revelations could follow him to florida, state senate president don goetzone of the highest ranking republicans in the state, quipped to "national journal," i just hope he doesn't snarl up traffic on the pensacola bridge. hardy-har. remember, christie hasn't been sworn in for a second term yet. that happens a week from now in trenton. frank palone announced the inspector general will indeed audit new jersey's use of $25 million of sandy aid that was money for a marketing campaign to promote tourism at the jersey shore. at issue, the bidding process for the stronger than the storm ads, which did feature christie and his family. the winning firm charged the state about $2 million more than the next lowest bidder. it's just the latest shoe to drop, the chair of the new jersey legislative panel investigating the lane closures this weekend said this. >> if it becomes known that the governor was involved, and he knew about it and he knew about the cover-up, and he was approving the actions taken by his senior staff, that raises serious questions that the assembly

. >> guest: well, there was a former governor and senator from florida named lawton chiles who was elected i think to the senate in 1970 and then in the early 1990s was a two-term governor. he always had a limit on what he would take. first it was $10 in contributions and then it was 100. i could always max out to him but you know i would love to see money reduced in politics. the supreme court has ruled that money is free speech essentially and so it's probably not going to happen but the other important reform that we need to have is we need to have congressional redistricting. because right now most congressicongressi onal seats, not all of them but probably 90% of party safe. if you are in a republican seat you are going to win, you were going to win that district almost every time and the only way you will be challenged as if you get challenged in the primary by another republican. redistricting so skewers the democratic outcome that in the 2012 election democrats won 1 million votes for the house of representatives than the republicans but because of where the districts were drawn re

joining us now, florida senator marco rubio. >> good morning. >> it's such a -- it's not just poverty talk about income distribution. it's really a paradoxical discussion that we have again and again. and republicans ought to have a much better story than they've had in the past, especially with what has happened to people in need over the past five years, because the people that the president so wanted to help, if you look at metric, food stamps, disability, participation in the work force, you look at any of those things, you would say they're headed in the wrong direction. simply widening the safety net to a much greater number of people is not what any of us wanted in this country. yet the republicans seem to have a hard time getting that message out. >> well, again, we hope not. we hope that will change. here's the problem as i see it. the problem is not simply the income and equality that the president is focused on, the problem is opportunity and inequality. the cashier at a fast food restaurant makes less than the e consider of the company. that's not the issue. the issue is i

so in this bill today, introduced with senator rubio of florida, we continue to support our labs' core missions. we're not sproazing anything drastic. what we're -- proposing anything drastic. what we're doing is modernizing the labs for the 21st century so that ideas developed in the labs can most effectively become innovations in the marketplace. we only need to look to the labs themselves for inspiration on how to do this. so we make two broad proposals. first, we're integrating the management of the department of energy's science and energy programs to improve linkages between basic and applied science. this will allow the early stages of research and development to be translated more efficiently and it's something that department of energy secretary has signaled he supports and is going to move forward with. second, we're giving the national labs more power to work with the private sector, to ensure that more scientific discoveries turn into commercial breakthroughs. together these two steps would allow us to strea streamline th' work so it can more effectively translate into the
