jackie seemed to be more in love, right? >> i think so. the secrets have all come out now that none of the american people knew in the 1960s. kennedy, the women. we know all their names from audrey hepburn to the 19-year-old intern who wrote that look. jackie knew about it. she knew who he was before she married him but she accepted it. there were rumors that they came close to divorce once early in the marriage but they stay together. i think one thing that brought them together in the fall of 1963 was the death of their newborn son patrick who lived less than two days. jackie and the president were devastated. something about that loss, she had already given birth to a stillborn daughter before the boy died. something about that loss did something to them i think. it rocked them closer. she agreed to campaign with him for the election of 1964. dallas was just the beginning. she told him, i will go anywhere with you. they were viewing each other in a different and closer way. they were having a great time on the trip to texas. >> she agreed to go to texas because lyndon johnson and ralph yarborough for senator were at each other's

kennedy. pat asked, how would you like to go? jackieaid she would like a private is it very pat nixon and president nixon organized a private visit for the kennedys, which turned out to be a remarkable event for all concerned. both caroline and john junior wrote letters afterwards thanking the nixons. jackie herself wrote a very warm letter. despite whatever anger they might have had or she might have had about the 1960 campaign, she was a human first and realized the importance of letting president kennedy's widow and children come to the white house for the important unveiling. >> we have to get into politics in the life story. during the world war ii does, richard nixon was on active duty with the navy. his first run for congress was 1946. how did he make the foray into politics? >> when he came back, he was still on active duty. he was contacted by someone from california, and they were looking for somebody to run against jerry in the 12 congressional district. talk to pat and they agreed they would -- he would go back out and talk

when jackie met jackie kennedy, she was working as a reporter for the "washington times" held and making $42.50 a week. that was her whole income. for a woman who liked french cuisine and the finer things in life, that wasn't the life she envisioned for a so. they married each other for convenience. jack continued his ways. he often left at home alone. she seldom traveled with him on these trips even before or after he became president. i will say this but i think there were two things that start to change their marriage and make them a little closer. the first was the trip to paris in 1961 wer 1961 when jackie tos by a storm. she spoke french, studied in france. she loved french designers, everything french. the welcome she received really impressed her husband. he realized i hit a homerun when i picked this woman. she's fabulous. and then the second was the death that dean mentioned of their infant son, patrick, who was born and died prematurely, died in august 63. there was a tenderness that have been missing before. jackie had lost her first child, a little girl, but then syndicated
