massachusetts, in particular cape cod, the islands as that area of snow starts to surge its way up from the southwest. but north and west of boston, it's over. new york city, philadelphia, washington, d.c., and down towards norfolk it's over. believe it or not, around norfolk, virginia, we had about 4 inches of snow. that's crazy. now, here in the northeast, the winds are starting to ramp up near the coast as the storm intensifies. these are recent wind gusts anywhere from 20 to 40 miles an hour. so, when you combine that with some pretty chilly arctic air, well, we're looking at some low realfeel temperatures. currently in boston, it's 11. new york is 12 and d.c., 13. so that snow has been light and fluffy, so if you like to make snowball, it's kind of hard to do that. you'll certainly have to bundle up for the morning hours. it's cold out there. look at those realfeel temperatures, well below zero. and guess what, it does look like this cold pattern will continue for awhile, so the storm pulls out. brisk winds, especially near the coast, there will be blowing, drifting snow, and that will make it hard to keep those roadways clear. now back to you guys. >> all right, accuweather's mar

north and west of d.c. we have got the snow that will stick on the ground for quite a while now. see from the satellite. it is like taking a snapshot in space. everything white reflects back, so all that white that you see if the snow cover across our area. what i want to point out that is really cool on this satellite picture is streaks of snow here coming in, this is what we would call they affect snow showers. so there is a line of snow that develops because the water is warmer than the air, and that cold air blows over the warmer water, just like lake-effect snow. it happens across the great lakes. kind of a cool weather. snowfall, dulles airport at 8.5 inches, reagan national at 3.8 inches, but the have your amounts inside the district, including the national zoo, that panda got seven inches of snow. bwi, this is an updated number, by the way, this is a record, too, at 5.1 inches. old record, blown away with 2 inches back in 1982. across the region, feel pretty good about the verification on this forecast was op-ed may be overdone into the southeast, but this is really expecting be heavier bands. 8.5 in leesburg, 8 in damascus. b

in the d.c. area, we're expecting 3 to of inches of snow. the further west you get out in western maryland and pennsylvania, west virginia and working your way northup to 10 inches of snow as the hardest part of the snowfall or the biggest portion of the snowfall really hits this afternoon and into the rush hour. so interestingly, about three or four years ago we had a big snow in the d.c. area hitting about the same time. the hardest part of the snow coming in the late afternoon. that's just when they released everybody from work early. so we had tens of thousands of people stuck on area roads in the d.c. area just as this blizzard hit. and people were stuck for literally six to eight hours going nowhere. this time the federal government and the local city and state governments are closed today. schools are out. many businesses have said don't bother coming in so we have far fewer people on the roads today and of course this comes one day after the mlk holiday here in washington in which it was nearly 60 degrees yesterday. folks outside in t shirts and playing frisbee. this is the kind of story that you as an anchor should be out here with me exp
