this one is with shaun donovan. he is the mayor of newton, massachusetts.we will talk about the administrative priorities in housing development. able to talk to a wide audience this morning. we have a few items on our agenda this morning. i want to begin with secretary donovan and then we're going to hear from city community development director and then we will hear from the brookings institute. risenree speakers have tatian's and question and answer andave presentations question and answers. i am going to start with secretary donovan, and then we will move to our agenda. know hownote, you all funds are.dbg i want to get this out before we start the meeting. we are pleased with the good 14 for cdbgal year funding. it is up for -- up to all of us to be aggressive in talking to members of congress and the senate about how important this program is. i want to mention two things that we're going to be asking committee members to participate in between now and the spring. this year is the 40th anniversary of cdbg funds. it is one of the most successful program

if you want to know what we're doing about it, go talk to secretary shaun donovan. and here how he is using the full strength of the federal government to take 24 communities across the country and create in them an economic renaissance. go talk to kathleen sebelius about how despite the initial glitches we are enrolling 6 million people in health care plans since october. secretary arnie duncan in education and hear about his efforts to give all four-year-olds the chance to go to preschool. especially the ones from low- income families. our talk to administrator jane mccarthy who is making sure those schools are healthy places for kids to learn or secretary johnson who is ensuring that the streets are safe to help them get there. you may be wondering what i am doing. it is a fair question. our transportation system in a sense is like the rings of a tree. by looking at what we build and when we built it, you can read the social history of this country. you pick just about any city in this country that was very active during the jim crow era thebefore and you will se

interestingly enough, the man who's been tasked with overseeing it for the federal government, shaun donovan, i had an opportunity to ask him a question about that very issue last week, and he said that while we recommended increased transparency in the next disaster. so in really isn't -- there's a amount of data available. we've been trying to track it, going through the new jersey site it's equally frustrating to try to figure out what is our taxpayer dollars actually buying, what are we getting for that $50 billion that was approved in the sandy supplemental. >> fair share housing centers had to sue the christie administration to get some data to allow them to calculate racial disparities. it's amazing to me that we had this huge political fight about the sandy money. we were covering it here on the network, the money got allocated, and again, my concern isn't that we're wasting government money. my concern is, there are people who need the money, there are important things that must be done to mitigate against future disasters, and i'm not convinced based on this accusation that we know

after the show, shaun donovan will be joining volunteers to walk the capitol hill neighborhood to learn more about how these folks are and what they need. joining me now is the secretary of the u.s. housing and urban development. ending homelessness ends in some ways impossible. but there is reason to believe that this is a problem that government can solve with the right policy in place. >> i'm so glad you started that way, chris. i'm a guy who got interested in housing by volunteering at a homeless shelter in college, and if you had asked me back then, if you had asked just about anybody who was volunteering with me, we could have never imagined we would be talking about ending homelessness, but through the remarkable efforts of volunteers like i'm going to be with tonight out on capitol hill, remarkable mayors, nonprofits, the private sector, and some good work on the federal government side as well, we can actually talk about, and actually have a president who has a plan to end homelessness. and one of the reasons why this is working is because the more work we've done on ending hom

. >> the secretary of housing and urban development said on this show last night, shaun donovan, he was, quote, confident that the money was spent in the right way. do you have that same confidence? >> i have some confidence in that. the confidence comes from who's getting the money and where it's going. we're getting information about people who filed for applications for grants. they're being dispersed. i have confidence in that. there are those things that occur that we don't know about. that's where the problem is. we talk about transparency. whenever that amount of money is being involved, there needs to be transparency for the sake of the administration and sake of us legislators. >> i want to bring in sam, host of online podcast majority report. what the assemblywoman said is a basic but also very conservative-friendly point. back when this bill was the most controversial thing in washington, tea party republican tim huelskamp had this to say. take a listen. >> we just want to make certain the money gets to those in need and in a proper way and make sure it goes through the cours

even the hud secretary shaun donovan said so in a congressional testimony last fall.estion here is, was the money for the campaign spent properly? >> interesting stuff, thanks very much, chris frates with his good reporting. let's dig diaper. democratic congressman frank pallone of new jersey is a longtime christie critic, the one who asked for the federal probe into how taxpayer money was spent on this tourism marketing. the congressman joining us here in "the situation room." thanks very much for coming in. >> thank you. >> anything potentially illegal going on here? >> well, i think the question is how was this contract drawn up or, you know, how was it manipulated. that's what we don't know. the daily in my district, down at the jersey shore, basically did this investigation, and they compared the contracts between the two bids. they basically said the lower bid was not willing to put christie in the ad. and that was the one that was $2.5 million. and then when the higher bid at 4.7 said it would put him and his family in the ad, they were chosen. the question is

remarks by hud secretary shaun donovan on reducing homelessness. >> on monday, state department that iranianfirmed nuclear talks would resume in mid-february in new york. here are some of her remarks from the briefing. check, there are reports out of iran that they want talks on a competitive agreement that are due to take place in new york at the end of february. i wonder if you could give confirmation. >> sure, it is our understanding that those talks will be in new york in mid-february with states still being confirmed on schedules. hopefully in the next days we will have more specifics. >> why the move to new york as opposed to the wonderful city of geneva? >> geneva is beautiful this time of year, but new york was agreed to by high representative ashton. it has a similar support infrastructure to geneva and we believe that the u.n. and international support is important for agreement. no more reason than that. held within the you and buildings? or will it be outside. >> that is a good question, i'm not sure if that level of detail has been determined, but i can check. plus wendy
