they will assign, in fact, a new supercommittee to keep the investigation going. they will add a special counsel to that committee to beef up its investigatory powers. and crucially, they will keep assemblyman john wisniewski in charge of the inquiry which is a good sign for the direction of the inquiry because what has been driving his investigation, at least as far as he's concerned, the way he explains it is the question of why. we still have no idea why the christie administration did what they did to ft. lee. we know they did do it, which, itself, certainly appears to be a crime. we know that they have played vengeful politics before and that this kind of politics is the way the governor has conducted himself in office. but as to whether or not governor chris christie, himself, is implicated in whatever crimes may have been comitted here or any other senior staffers in his administration, that is a question that can only be answered once we know why. and to that point, steve kornacki is here next with something really interesting that he has just dug up. stay

state lawmakers announced today there will be a single supercommittee to investigate the sprawling questions about governor christie and his administration. it will include members from the senate and assembly and have full subpoena power. the announcement answers a key concern that separate investigations could have slowed down the hunt for answers. today was supposed to be a day of celebration, the start of governor christie's second term after his triumphant reelection victory. perhaps setting the stage for a presidential run. but all that has been clouded by the growing investigations. we don't know if the latest allegations involving sandy aid are true, or whether the governor had more knowledge of the lane closings than he claimed. but these questions cut to the core of his supposed strengths. right now his administration is facing multiple investigations. from the new jersey legislature, from the port authority's inspector general, and most ominously, from the u.s. attorney's office. this evening a snowstorm forced the cancellation of the governor's inauguration party. the governor di

the supercommittee is going to be formed. we just got an announcement on thursday they're going to convene. the first matter is going to be renewal of subpoena power. and the expectation is that on thursday, or friday at the latest, there will be a new round of subpoenas. specifically to bridget kelly for her e-mails and bill stepien, the governor's former campaign manager. so those, how those get responded to, and what we see, what documents we see, what more we learn are going to be crucial factors in how this plays out. david wildstein took the fifth amendment last week. he is, you know, a critical player in all of this, as far as all the testimony goes. he was the guy that implemented the lane closures on the bridge. all we know is, prior to doing that, he had this communication from bridget kelly. time for traffic problems in ft. lee. is bridget -- will bridget kelly testify? if she does, will she take the fifth amendment? those are big questions that are sort of beyond christie's ability to influence at this point. and
