susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie.ne of the justices delayed the health care law for some religious organizations. it's the part that requires them to offer birth control as part of their health care plan, and it would have taken effect just as 2014 arrives. supreme court justice sonia sotomayor had a busy new year's eve. she blocked part of the health care law and then welcomed in the times square ball for 2014. justice sotomayor delayed the requirement that religious organizations offer birth control as part of their health insurance plans or face penalties. the request for the stay came from a catholic group, the little sisters of the poor, home for the aged in denver, which said it goes against their catholic beliefs. religious groups fought against offering contraceptives since it was first proposed as part of the affordlablffordable health . they offered a compromise saying they would not have to pay for it. >> the insurance company, not the hospital or charity would be reaching out to offer the contraceptive car

susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. president obama says he has no illusions about how hard it's going to be to achieve the objectives of this deal but he says for the sake of national security, now is the time to give diplomacy a chance. still many in congress are not fully on board. iran's foreign minister appeared announce a six-month deal to limit its nuclear program. he says beginning next week iran will limit enrichment of uranium to 5%, a level used for power producti production. iran also agrees to dilute its stockpile of 20% enriched uranium, which is just below weapons grade. in exchange the u.s. and five other powers will reduce sanctions and will have access to nuclear sites to make sure iran is complying with the agreement. secretary of state john kerry sounded cautiously optimistic a long-term solution could be reached. >> the negotiations will be very difficult, but they are the best chance that we have to be able to resolve this critical national security issue peacefully and durably. >> senator mark kir

susan mcginnis is in washington with more. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. these numbers show enrollments through the end of december, exactly halfway through the total enrollment period and they're the first ones now broken down by age and gender. but what they're showing is, the older crowd is the ones mostly signing up. that's bad news for the white house that is why there's a big push to get the young people on board. >> reporter: the white house says more people are signing up for federal health insurance. 2.2 million americans have enrolled under the affordable care act. but a deeper look at the numbers shows only about a quarter of them are age 18 to 34. the white house needs about 40% of that age group on board or premiums will rise for everyone. >> we think that more and more young people are going to sign up as time goes by. so we're actually very pleased with the percentage that we have so far. >> reporter: critics pounced on the new numbers. house speaker john boehner's spokesman said there's no way to spin it, youth enrollment has been a bust so
