with renee powell, he waited in the woods next to her apartment.nt to the laundry room in the basement, she left her door open. he went inside, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and hid. when renee returned, he attacked binding her arms with lamp cords from inside the apartment, then sexually assaulting and stabbing her to death. he grabbed some items of value, a vcr, a coat, dismantled the smoke detector, then he set the fires to destroy evidence. the case of barbara walsh was virtually identical. she, too, was doing her laundry and had left the door open while she went downstairs. like the first crime, parker used materials he found inside the apartment. after the sexual assault and murder, he used the towels in the bathroom to clean up before setting the fire. in the folded towels, one hair with the root intact survived the intense heat, smoke, and flames. a tiny hair found with the help of an angry girlfriend intent on getting revenge. investigators think the motive for parker's crimes was, in part, his anger and resentment towards his girlfrien

he stumbled down these stairs that lead to the powell street b.a.r.t. that prompted the closure of that station for a short time. the street was packed when the shooting hammed after 7:00. many people ducked into the west field shopping center to escape the gunfire. police blocked off the sidewalk in this area as they gathered evidence. one man who was nearby at the time told us he heard several gunshots and he told us he was thankful no innocent bystanders were hit. >> very fortunate here. very fortunate, you know, it's kind of inconvenient, you know, for some gunshots to go off in this area. >> this is surprising for something to go on like this down here especially with a bunch of tourists and things like that, you know. >> reporter: the teenaged victim in this case underwent surgery last night at the hospital and police say he is still alive. we don't know his current condition. police haven't said what may have prompted the gunman to open fire but again, they do believe the shooter in this case was targeting this teenager. bebring you back out here
