i taught 55 juniors in southwest atlanta. many had outside challenges that were unimaginable.any of the girls who i taught either had kids or were pregnant when i taught. i taught 11th grade. so it was tough to say the least. many of my students didn't have both parents at home. but it took our teachers wrapping our arms around our kids, -- embracing parents to make a difference. i knew i wanted to teach. i didn't want to go to law school. i had been tutoring students so i signed up, and it has been the best experience of my life. >> we have our community tweeting in . . . on the flip side . . . and i want to go to you with this, are these teachers prepared for their challenges? >> there are two ways to answer that. one is to say no. and the other is to say they are a lot better prepared today than they were 20 years ago. >> they are an effective group. they learn from their mistakes. they get better over time. they are very good at marshalling fundraisers, and that's one reason why they are so visible. >> i think a lot of people will debate the word effective. because while t

according to the atlanta constitutional journal, southwest is canceling or suspending most if not all of its operations in atlanta. nearly all southwestern flights are going to be cancelled today. delta which has a hub in atlanta is canceling flights. to give you an idea of how bad things are in atlanta, delta employees had to sleep on planes overnight because there weren't enough hotel rooms. weather also affecting operations in charlotte, north carolina. more than 33 i should say 330 flights arrivals and departures have been canceled. dallas is even experiencing cancellations. what will that mean for midway and o'hare as the day goes on still remains to be seen. there were some cancellations yesterday because of the weather. no big problems at o'hare or midway. we will wait and see what happens. as always if you are heading out, call your airlines to see how things are going. >>taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. the man charged with killing a store clerk in bensenville is due in bond court today. kenneth bardlett is charged with first degree murder, for the death

coast, you are hitting all the major hubs starting in dallas, where you have american and southwest going through atlanta with delta, and then go up through d.c. and new york, really all the major airlines are going to be impacted. here are the stat totals in terms of cancellations and delays so far. this comes to us from flight aware. already, 1300 flights canceled today, delays totally more than 4200, and the most impacted airline, no surprise, given the impact we are seeing at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson airport, delta is most impacted. take a look at shares of delta over the last three months. yes, it's lower relatively speaking over the last month or so but it's up 13%, when you look at the last three months. so bottom line is this. the airlines know that it's going to be terrible weather for people even getting to the airport so they are already canceling flights. expect this to continue over the next couple days. >> phil, you know, it hasn't just been in january we have had bad weather. december was a mess as well. right around the holiday period. now the department of transportation is scoring t
