i'm ama daetz. we are following developing news out of vallejo tonight. firefighters battling a fire at a business on sonoma boulevard near california street. lillian kim is live. reporter: the thick black smoke that could be seen from as far away as mt. tam is here in vallejo in a commercial building, just north of valley vista eave. the situation is much better now. firefighters say they have it under control. the call came in at 4:45 p.m., and the fire quickly grew to two, three, then four alarms. it started as a grass fire and then pred to a tow --yard. that's a lot of vehicle traffic so the fire has caught the attention of vallejo residents. some tweeted that the smoke was tough on their lungs, but the smoke has gone down significantly. firefighters now have the fire under control but will be here for a while to mop up and keep an eye on hot spots. >>> police officers from across the bay area pitched in to help out the family of a fallen officer. b.a.r.t. police sergeant tom smith died in the line of duty two months ago. today his colleagues held a s

i'm ama daetz. while police have a suspect, there are new questions about exactly what happened and how that officer got shot. he is recovering tonight at san francisco general. that's where cornell bernard picks up the story with details you'll see only on abc7 news. reporter: police say their suspect is a convicted felon who was in possession of ammunition when he was arrested but it's important to mention he is not facing any weapons charges at this point. meantime, the wounded police officer is recovering here at san francisco general tonight from a gunshot wound. police chief stood vigil outside the hospital where officer adam shaw is recovering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. he told abc7 news exclusively that the 28-year-old will be okay. >> they just moved the officer from icu. he is in very, very good spirits. actually stood up and moved to a wheelchair. they put him into a room. >> overnight a dramatic police chase for the suspect spanned four counties, ending early sunday in san jos

i'm ama daetz. thank you for joining us. we have team coverage of the shooting and manhunt. let's go to news reporter sir gentlemen quintana, who is live on the phone in daly city. what can you tell us about the search for the suspect? >> can tell you that following the shooting, the gunman sped off and hopped on the freeway out of san francisco, made his way here to daly city. i'm standing treat from -- feet from where officers spotted the gunman's getaway car. what we gathered from watching officers is that the gunman ditched his car and then ran into neighborhood. police saw the car, and then immediately began an intense search of several neighborhood blocks. there are multiple police agencies part of this ongoing search. residents in the area have to carefully navigate through this very active search area where there are assault weapons and guns drawn. in the last hour, s.w.a.t. teams from the san francisco police department and the san mateo sheriff's department have arrived. it's not clear if the gunman has been located, but i can tell you there are several swat team o
