barbara starr at the pentagon, thanks very much. let's dig a little bit deeper. we're joined by the former national security adviser to president george w. busholitical commentator carl bernstein who has been doing some reporting on what's going on. stephen hadley, first to you. how is this president doing? >> he's in the early innings. i think he has a real opportunity. this is a crisis that goes to the heart of a 60-year project in europe and post cold war an effort to build europe whole free and at peace involves some of our closest allies. questions have been raised about the diffidence of his leadership. this is a real opportunity -- >> what would you do differently? >> what he's got to do in the short run obviously is we're trying to keep the russians from going further beyond crimea and to roll it back. but what he's got to do now is play for the long game. he's got to do three things. he's got to recommit to the security of europe and recommit to nato and reassure our friends and allies. he's got to convince our european allies to open the door and make it clear that these countries caught between europe and russia are welcome in nato
