concussion legislation as well as the work we are currently doing at the university of alabama birminghamo improve sports safety. sports are an extremely important part of our culture. we take the safety of children seriously. the problem of concussion has gained prominence over the last decade. recent studies have identified long-term health consequences including depression and other diseases associated with repeated impacts. while college and professional football gets the most media attention, it is important to keep in mind greater than 70% of all football players in the u.s. are under 14. we will need to address the issues athletes. parallel to enacting the alabama concussion law in 2011, the task force initiated a statewide concussion education and awareness program. it worked. in the first year, we observed a 500% referral increase in student athletes referred. it is a trend that has held steady with about 350 youth athletes seen every year. to optimize care of this increasing population, we created a protocol following the zÜrich guidelines. they were evaluated, kept out of sport
