we're told he was hanging out here at john d. in campbell near the baseball field when the violence broke out. now, here's a photograph of 24- year-old todd tharp. campbell police say he's a transient. they have arrested him for the teen's murder. they say at 8:30 last night, the teen was with his friends near the bleachers of the baseball field. they got into an argument with tharp and it turned physical. tharp was beat up. the teen was stabbed. it's ununclear who injured who first. the boy is from san jose. police have been collecting evidence and conducting interviews. too find out more about how this came about, i'm joined by captain dave carmichael with campbell police. where are you at with this investigation? do we know if the group of teens knew this man? >> we don't know if they knew each other ahead of time. we're still looking into that possibility and haven't ruled that out. >> reporter: where are you at in the investigation? >> our time crime scene team has been out here and we're still following up and conducting in

todd tharp regrets pulling out a knife during an argument at john d. morgan park sunday night which police say killed 16 year old ivan diaz amucaz.. the 24 year old transient says he was talking with a group of guys who were drinking and doing drugs. tharp remembers the conversation turning sour and suddenly he was being hit and kicked in the head. he says he pulled out the knife that he always carries and started swinging in self defense. tharp says he has a 16 year old brother and if he could go back in time he would let them beat him. instead of taking a teenagers life. >> i want to say sorry to the young man's parents. i really am sorry. he has a 15 staples in his head right now from the incident. he also says that he has never been arrested before, never been to jail. never even got a parking ticket. >> check out this video of a close call at the cal-train station in redwood city. a group crosses the tracks. and one person barely escapes getting hit by a train on a speedy approach to the station. caltrain officials say the barrier arm was engaged
