linda mcpherson were in their home. he was saved, his wife of 46 years was gone. linda managed the derrington library for 40 years and had retired and enjoyed working in the garden. allen schauffler is back and has a friend of linda mcpherson's. >> we are here with marr vip -- marvin, a teacher at the school. you knew linda mcpherson, can you tell us about her? >> linda was on the school board for a few years, and pretty much a community service person after we started the library. while i worked for the school district she was helping me and became a personal friend. >> you lived here for 50 years, and are teaching your third generation of students. what is it like to see some of the people you know and caught over the years disappear in something like this? >> they are all kind of family, and in this community everything is the barter system where you do something for someone and they do something for you. the exchange is an exchange of love. now i'm teaching the grandkids and the girl found in the car, for example, was my first drivered in home schooling. she wa

. >> reporter: linda mcpherson was sharing a cup of coffee with her husband gary when the slide hit. he was washed 200 yards down the road and lived. but she did not survive. >> we're grieving for our loss, because she was such a wonderful sister. she was like a rock in our family. >> reporter: experts say the mudslide's debris field is 30 to 40 feet deep in spots, as tall as a four-story building. the volume, 15 million cubic yards. as nearly five times as much mud as there is concrete in the hoover dam. amid this impossible search, there are now more questions. did logging on the ridge directly above the slide play a role? today we learned of a 2010 report that warned of the exact area where the earth gave way was dangerous. >> people knew that this is a landslide-prone area. sometimes big events just happen. and i want to understand why. >> reporter: those answers will come in the days ahead. for now those leading the search are struggling to stay strong. >> we are humbled beyond belief in this county. we have received -- it is very humbling. >> reporter: for a second day in a row

. >> reporter: her sister, linda mcpherson, was one of the victims of the washington state landslide. body was found hours after the tragedy occurred. linda lived next door to her niece and nephew who thankfully were out of their house when the landslide happened. this is wreckage from their house. linda was next door with her husband mack at the time. he was hurt but will survive. >> what kind of sister was linda? >> oh, my gosh. she was such a great sister. she was always there if you needed anything. so was so nonjudgmental. >> reporter: irene and her husband ralph lived 15 minutes away. they got the awful now in a phone call from their son. irene tries not to think about what her sister experienced. >> i don't think about it. in my darkest moments, if that comes into my thoughts i don't go there. because i can't imagine what she went through. >> reporter: on the day after the landslide, family members went back to linda's nieces and nephew's home to try to recover a say. it was there they found something else extremely valuable. i watch with irene the video a friend shot of the re
