. >> that is the idea of black power that martin luther king becomes of moral center. without him it is not the march it is his name and presence that draws people both the local people sometimes people just want to see martin mr. king but it is also what draws more federal attention and national media attention and sncc realizes this march does not mean anything for the attention that we want to generate. king is constantly pushing multiple directions it is revealed it is morally powerful because he tries to articulate to people like stokely carmichael but crafted into a larger language of non-violent action id integration of america and to do so with a rhetorical gifts to merge these messages in it is the burden by the end of the march he is worn down. but by this same token without him. >> host: why do they call it a mistake? >> it is to the end of the march as he has gone to extraordinary trials. the marchers had just gotten to philadelphia. june 24 -- june 21st exactly two years later the anniversary of the of murder of three civil-rights workers. so to commemorate

martin luther king?r youth, and i was just wondering what advice you could have and thank you for your time. >> guest: okay. well, in terms of the youth, i think that one of the most powerful things that we can use and, you know, malcolm x talks about this in his autobiography was his love of reading, his love of learning. i think part of the problem is finding out the story. and i think that i was very, very fortunate to live in the household i lived in and i grew up in and the minnesota to haves i -- mentors i had to sort of find out the storiment but then also once with you find out the story, what do you do? and anger certainly i understand anger, but you should use that knowledge as fuel to become whether it's an organizer and an activist, whether it's a teacher, whether it's a doctor, whether it's some kind of lead e right? so i think that anger is best redirected into something that is hugely, hugely positive for the entire african-american community including things like volunteering and mentorin

after martin luther king jr.ssinated in 1968, his widow requested his record recording of the final sermon at ebenezer baptist church be played at his funeral. ebenezer baptist church still stands now as the martin luther king jr. historic site which includes his boyhood home and grave site. in the sweet auburn district of atlanta which is east of downtown. the first time i ever drove across country when i was a teenager, i remember going there to see the grave site of dr. king and i remember looking in on the church and not knowing until i saw it that the church was still an active church, that it still has a congregation, that it's still there. i don't know what your job is, but it is hard to imagine a more humbling job in the world than being the pastor of the church where dr. martin luther king jr. was pastor, right, and his father before him. there is a man who has that job now. his name is dr. raphael g. warnock. today he was arrested at the georgia state capitol. this is a report from local channel 46 in a

i was glad you mentioned martin luther king because it is probably impossible in jefferson school which used to be an all black school during segregation, probably impossible to talk about this topic without referencing earlier this year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the historic march on washington, martin luther king's iconic i have a dream speech and as we were going over the speech this summer and it was all over the newspapers i went back and actually read it and noticed a portion that hasn't gained as much attention, i want to read a small segment of it tonight, today. in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check, when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall air. this was the promise that all men, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the inalienable right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. it is obvious today, he said, that americans have defaulted on this promissory notes in so far

"stokely: a life." dr. joseph, good to have you on this program. i suspect that clip might be a bit arresting. that's some pretty strong language for this person we know as america's peacemaker standing right next to him. >> yes, and it's a really good example of king and carmichael's relationship with each other. are friends. in a way they mentor each other. they become a sort of ian and yang when we think of the second half of the 1960's in terms of the freedom right struggle. tavis: there was always this of them.etween the two they loved each other. they respected each other. they were friends with each other, but there was this tension between nonviolence on king side and the other way on stokely's side. tell me about that. >> stokely carmichael comes from trinidad. he is part of the nonviolent coordinating committee. he is a young activist who was arrested 27

he inspires martin luther king jr. to come out more forcefully in the war in 1967.they show they were fearful of stokely carmichael. and those clips show him saying, hell no, we won't go. and that's the phrase from the anti-war movement. he's not just a black power activist but a human rights activist and anti-war activist. >> you're right about the civil rights pioneer that is a young carmichael crossed paths with poet sterling brown, tony morrison, who we are familiar with teaching carmichael's freshman english class, howard, how did these relationships shape his activism? >> they shaped it very, very importantly and indelibly. he learns from activists like fanny lou hamer in mississippi, and they teach him the nuts and bolts of social justice and a deep love of black people. he always says he's organizing out of love and undying love for black people. so he's not the angry, young man, the profit of rage that he's been made out to be. that's the stereo type. he's really a complicated charismatic but also sensitive, intelligent and intellectual figure who listened

so malcolm x was here, martin luther king, jr. was here. where was stokely carmichael in that continuum? >> i think stokely is a bridge figure and fits in with dr. king and mal malcolm x as a figure ws on the stage of talking about human rights and pushing the envelope. he's the only major black power icon who is also a civil rights activist. so he doesn't just come into activism in the mid, late '60s when things goat get the hot. he knew dr. king -- >> ifill: they got along well. they were a good fit. stokely cries when king is assassinated. he considers him a friend, older brother, mentor, and father figure, but he was also mentored by women, so he's a very interesting figure who's also a critic of the vietnam war. he's a critic of economic injustice. so black power only tells a part of the story. >> ifill: it's interesting, even though he was considered to be the most difficult, the most controversial of the three of them in lots of ways, he lived longer than either of them did and was not assassinated like the other two. >> both king an

as martin luther king junior said, from the pulpit of the church on december 5, 1955 in montgomery, alabama, as thousands of black people prepared to embark on a bus, boycott, he said this is our challenge, and our overwhelming responsibility. thank you.
