let's go to rob mcbride at the airport in beijing. what can you tell us right now? >> it is a very agonising weight for relatives, friends of passengers aboard the aircraft, waiting for confirmation that the aircraft has, indeed, crashed in the sea. what we are hearing from malaysian airline officials in beijing, and from malaysia itself is that they cannot confirm there has been a crash. they have heard the same reports that we have, quoted on reuters newsagency. that a senior vietnamese naval official said there has been a crash. the agency is trying to get this corroborated. this has been reported. they are trying to get a corroboration. until they do get that confirmation, it is very difficult for the airline to confirm that. their official position is that this airline is officially missing. it's been some 12 hours since the last contact with the aircraft, a good six or seven hours since passengers should have been arriving in the hall at beijing international airport. relatives of passengers are being looked after at a hotel nearby, where several hundred of th

now we go to beijing where rob mcbride is waiting. imagine its difficult for people there as they wait for any information on the flight. >> a long anguished day of waiting here. and now a long night of the same. during the i day relatives and friends have been turning up as news spread about the disappearance of this aircraft, showing up in a distraught state, and gradually directed to a hotel nearby. several hundreds have congregated throw the day. a number of those are being accommodated at two hotels. there is a very anguished scene and some anger from a number of passenger who is said they haven't had the kind of information they would expect from the malaysian airline staff. some say they have not seen a representative from the airline at all. there has been some anger on social media, the airline being criticized for not coming forth and giving details about the aircraft disappearance for hours. they are sending a team to beijing, a team with caregivers and people trained in counseling. the governments of the two countries have

rob mcbride has more. >> an agonising wait for news. here the beijing international airport to the aircraft. reports emerging that the aircraft crashed into the sea. the reports coming from vietnamese state media, quoting a senior vietnamese naval official saying it crashed 150 miles off the coast of vietnam. it's not been confirmed by mair lines. -- mair lines themselves, their point of few is is that the aircraft is missing. until we see the wreckage or that there has been a crash landing at sea. they maintain the position that as far as we know the aircraft is listed as missing. an anxious time for relatives. 40, 50 relatives are being looked after at a hotel near here. we understand from chinese authorities, 150 to 160 chinese nationals on board, waiting for confirmation of what happens. it's gut wrenching for the relatives. many have been taken to a hotel and put in a room. malaysian airlines says 152 of the 227 passengers were chinese. >>. >> translation: i'm worried. what if something horrible happened. i'm scared. my husband has

rob mcbride is there. what is the latest? >> well, the waiting continues, waiting to get confirmation of this reported crash in the south china sea. these reports have been running for the past couple hours, mainly on reuters, quoting the state media, who interviewed a senior navy official from the vietnamese navy. they said that the aircraft crashed. until the malaysian airlines gets confirmation of that, until there is confirmation of wreckage and so on, it is difficult for them to give any kind of confirmation. the official line is that the aircraft are missing, and we don't know what happened to it. that's still the official position. we understand the various agencies are trying to get in touch with authorities in vietnam, trying to follow up and we are trying to find out how do we know the aircraft crashed. one assumes if it has crashed, it probably has done so. until we get confirmation it's difficult. it's agonising for the relatives. there was 150 to 160 chinese nationals on board the aircraft. an agonising weight. >

rob mcbride is at beijing international airport. has any contact been established with the plane? >> authorities had been trying to follow up with vietnamese authorities, where the reports had come from, where the aircraft crashed into the sea. it's 12 hours since the plane should have arrived here at beijing capital airport. the passengers would have been arriving at the hall. given the amount of time, the assumption has to be that it has been lost over the sea. if it had been lost over the land we would have had reports of that. authorities are trying to find out more information from the vietnamese that the reports came from, that it crashed into the sea. all we know further to that is another vietnamese naval official has been quoted as saying it could have gone down closer to the malaysian coast or the vietnamese coast than earlier thought. we know that aircraft and vessels have been dispatched to the area, where it's thought the aircraft has to be lost. until we see wreckage or get confirm hags that it crashed, it's a case of the aircraft being missing so far. >> i take it r
