navy used to hear the signal coming from the flight data recorder. what we understand is it's already been placed on the ocean shield, which means the vessel can go to the search area. but it's likely to take a few days before it reaches the area. once it gets there, it will help to join that search. so hopefully between -- when it leaves now and when it gets there will have some sort of lead to go off of. >> as far as what they have found so far, we know nothing is connected up to the airliner. have they pulled out or have they taken pictures of anything significant that they want to check out as far as size goes? >> not yet. really when we're talking about the size of images, those are usually the images picked up on satellite. they've had a number of countries contributing satellite images, france, china, even nasa has been using satellites to try and locate what they think might be potential objects to look at. we haven't seep any of those new images today and what we're hoping is that the planes can get a better look at what's there and sort of

us by phone. commander marks, the u.s. navyas made adjustments in how american assets are being used in the search. what can you tell us about where things are and where things go from here? >> our destroyer, the uss kid and helicopters has moved north, about as far north as you can get by the southern tip of burma there. essentially we have covered that entire area. we are pretty certain there is nothing there. and when you're looking at expanding into the rest of the indian ocean, and south, that is such an incredibly huge area, using a destroyer really is our best asset. what we wanted to do was get our best asset able to be used the most, which is our p-3 and our p-8. what we're doing is sending a that's the p-8 poseidon, down to perth, australia. we'll have coverage out of the south out of australia and coverage to the north part of the indian ocean with our p-3. both of those will give us the best chance to search and find anything, much longer range than having a ship out there. so that's what we're doing, repositioning.

but us in the navy, we're looking also. can't give you a definitive plan, but everything we do will be coordinated. we will not go off riding into the sunset on our own. it's very well coordinated and if a u.s. navy asset is the best to be there, we'll do it. if another country's assets are, then we'll let them do it. so it's not just the u.s. navy here trying to do our open thing. it's very well coordinated. >> in terms of the area where this debris, do you have a sense of how deep the water is there? >> overall, it's not a very deep area. it's relatively shallow water throughout the gulf of thailand. so i don't know exactly where it is, but overall this is not very deep water. i'm watching cnn to try to get a better view of where this is. >> so you're watching cnn to look at those images to get a better view of them to find out where they are? >> that's correct. but i should say, we have very smart people here, so i personally am looking at cnn, but we have other people reviewing all the information. >> commander marks, a

so they will use a lot of -- typically they would use navy assets, this is a huge exercise in internationald they will recover the wreckage. and i expect they would take to a fairly -- the closest place they could perhaps reasonably reassemble it or evaluate it. so i guess that might be australia. assuming that it appears -- they find about where they are looking. >> we talk about the altitude drop on the left turn. greg wants to know mh 370 reportedly dropped to 12,000 feet which would have meant two times the fuel consumption. so how does the elevation drop affect i guess fuel consumption. >> he's correct, the lower the airplane goes, the fuel more it will consume per mile. especially noticeable if you fry to maintain high speed. if you slow the airplane down, fuel consumption will go down always, but not enough to allow the airplane to get all the way to the indian ocean i don't believe. which means that there is something that is not krecorrec. the airplane did not go to 12 and stay at 12 or went on 12 and somehow climbed up to a higher al if i tud presumably at the a slower speed. or i
