captioning made e possible y the annenberg/cpb project the earth is a colorful planet, whether it's seen from the depths of space or the depths of canyons, from the lush green of the tropical jungles to the subtle yellows and oranges of the deserts. we can look at our development in many ways-- music, art, ideas, technology, even color because our use of color has played an intriguing role in advancing civilization. much of the world we have created for ourselves came from our pursuit of the chemistry of color. try to imagine a black-and-white world. it's nearly impossible to do so. color is such an essential part of nature. it's in a steady background of the living green or the blue sky or in the highlights of flowers or birds. the complex brain which distinguishes humans still depends on the senses, so it's no surprise that that feature of the visible world which gives it variety-- namely color-- should have entered our souls. we want color, and that's why we've brought together the plants in this garden. we describe our emotions in the red of anger and the blues. we want color on our

[barbershop quartet sings] (male narrator) much of the world's music involves the interaction of two or more tones being sounded simultaneously. this interaction, how the pitches relate to each other is defined in western music theory as harmony. (man) to me, harmony is similar to the spice that you use when you're creating a sauce. you've got a melody. there are many different ways you can harmonize the same melody, and the way you choose to harmonize it is what will give you a different emotional response. so in that sense, i really feel that the harmony is responsible for how a melody makes you feel. captioning made possible by the annenberg/cpb project this is siena, a wonderfully preserved medievality in central italy. at its heyday around 1300, it was one of the most civilized and prosperous places in europe. siena and other italian city-states can stand as a new beginning in our story of western art. hitherto, the old medieval world view had, put simply, divided the classes of society into the aristocracy at the top, the church, and the laboring peasantry at the bottom. in places like this, we see for the first time a new class, conscious of its own identity-- the merchants. these cities were no longer controlled by feudal lords. they were republics. here in siena, several thousand citizens were eligible for election to the governing bodies which met down there in the palazzo publica. and in the palazzo, there is a fresco painted in the 1340s which encapsulates their faith in the secular arts of government, in the moderating power of reason in human society. it's called the effects of good government. this marvous fresco, painted by ambrogio lorenzetti, was the first panoramic
