i'm jake tapper. welcome to a special prime time edition of "the lead." tonight we begin with a much-needed shot of urgency for flight 370. authorities thought they may have been on the right track now. they sound as if they are almost certain of it. searchers using u.s. naval equipment were able to acquire the pings in the ocean, increasing confidence that they will find flight 370 which disappeared 34 days ago. officials are trying to shrink down the search area, now the size of west virginia. that may sound vast, but it is nearly 12,000 miles smaller than yesterday. and we may be closer than ever to learning what really happened to the 239 people on board that plane. >> after 67 hours of silence, two new pings. but today crews are still hoping to find more. >> ocean shield has been able to re-acquire the signals on two more occasions. >> the elusive pings they have been desperately trying to re-capture detected again on tuesday, once for about five minutes, then again for seven. ocean shield has no

i'm jake tapper. we'll begin with the national lead, from the gulf to the great looks, 75 million americans are currently in the path of a tornado spawning severe weather system. i don't mean like a, oh, no, did i leave my car windows down kind of storm. it's more like i hope my car is still on the ground in one piece kind of storm. this could be heading your way in the next couple hours. this massive tornado inflicted wide-spread damage in louisville, mississippi. one of dozens of tornados unleashed by the storm system, the same storm system that killed 31 people from sunday. far from finished, it's now reloaded and ready for round three. some of those got hit yesterday by the same system. two people died when storms leveled a chunk of athens alabama and two hours north of there, 21-year-old swimmer from tuscaloosa was killed. the university website has a tribute to him on his home page. chad myers is in aberdeen, close to the border. how are conditions there? >> reporter: very moist and just steamy

i'm jake tapper. we begin with the world lead. yes, more than once we've heard officials describe a 239 people on board without any concrete sign of it. please consider it the most promising of the most promising lead. a signal detected in the indian ocean, using highly specialized equipment from the u.s., this is what picked the signal up. a pinger locator from the u.s. navy towed by the australian ship "ocean shield." if it is from the black box recorders, crews could be very close to finally finding the plane and uncovering what may have happened to throw it so wildly off course except, by many estimates, the batteries in the pingers should have already run out of juice. let's bring in rene marsh. this is one of the most encouraging signs we've seen yet but searchers are really under the gun now. >> they absolutely are under the gun. we are already two days past the required shelf life of the batteries. there's really no guarantee at this point how much longer they will last. but here's why authorities are cautiously optimistic
