not do what governor rick perry did. >> sotomayor. >> he should not do what governor rick perry did. >> today has been you awesome, girl. >> girl, today has not been so awesome for rick perry. because yesterday a texas district judge named 12 jurors and two alternates to a grand jury that is weighing possible criminal charges against the governor of texas. the issue is whether perry abused his power last summer when he carried out a threat to veto $7.5 million in funding for prosecutors in the state's public integrity unit. that unit is run by travis county district attorney, a democrat and also someone convicted of drunk driving last april. upon her conviction, perry called on her to resign. when she didn't, he axed the funding for her unit. at the time, the public integrity office happened to be examining one of governor perry's signature projects. and if she had resigned, perry would have been able to p a point her replacement. so questionable timing, poll ethics violations, partisan hijinx in the statehouse. it all sounds really familiar, doesn't it? almost unbelievably familiar.

citizens united, as you know, perry, has a bad reputation.the politics, though, to continue out to raise question a little bit, what about the idea here that democrats have tried to position themselves as against these big dollar donors? harry reid making a big play against the koch brothers, and, yet, unless they're going to union lat laterally -- democrats are going to be right in there, as you mentioned, in it is fight, and they're going to actually lose some of their ability to claim that they're more are of the working class party. >> it's really hard to win on these kinds of campaign finance and campaign -- most voters do not know who the koch brothers are. the democrats can increase the number of voters who do that. still, obama care, for instance, is known much more in north carolina and arkansas and kentucky and viewed more negatively than the koch brothers ever will. free media has done it. it's really hard to run against people who most people don't know. the koch brothers. that means it's not going -- i would argue it's not going

i'm here with melissa harris-perry and goldie taylor. it seems to me like, why?have been talking about the pay gap, the war on women, reproductive choice. it seems to me that this is low hanging fruit. there should be political space in this country to run on paid maternity leave and run on that hard. >> and there are very real outcomes to this. this isn't just about the sort of cusha stuff of being home with your children and pinching cheeks. this is economic outcomes. if you look at where children are in any given community and take some measurements, you can then extrapolate the outcomes of economics, of their academic achievement. you can extrapolate health care outcomes, the quality of life for that community, for generations to come, based on how the children are faring today and the access or inaccess they have to leave. >> all the research is showing earlier and earlier back. >> here's why i think the political faith isn't as obvious as it would appear. because there's a narrative that exists so strongly on the right and has taken hold to much of the left

you still had people like rick perry saying that they want to keep the issue. is there any way for the right to salvage the issue they wanted to talk about? or has cliven bundy made that impossible? >> well, there were so issues that they originally wanted to talk about. all of them, they think, wedge issues, rural america versus the elites in urban america, the real bedrock of this country, the cowboys versus everybody else. i think the only legitimate issue here, it is a legitimate issue. for instance, in nevada, the federal government owns 81% of the land. what would happen if the state took possession of that land? i don't think it's as clear as a lot of the states rights folks think. for instance, does anyone think that cliven bundy would've paid his fees if the state owned that land instead of the federal government? it's still public land. he still would've had to pay grazing fees on the state land. that is a legitimate policy issue. but for anyone to think that any of what went on with sean hannity and dean heller and the rest of them had anything to do

right now we want to go straight to nbc bay area's kimberly perry who joins us with the latest. >> reporter: diane, i'm going to get out of the way so you can see what's going on here just a few minutes ago, firefighters asked everyone to move back. there are a lot of people here just witnesses watching, looking at the fire. but the wind shifted just a few minutes ago blowing smoke into the area. i'm having a hard time breathing out here. there's a lot of ash coming down and a lot of smoke. this five alarm fire started at 3:00. san jose firefighters had to call in mutual aid. it is still a very active scene. i counted more than a dozen fire vehicles and that was maybe ten minutes ago, more have since shown up. a five-inch line has been pulled connected to a fire hydrant and a gun shooting 1,000 gallons of water at this fire a minute. when firefighters arrived the building, which is the former kntv station was fully engulfed in flames. this is a building they problems with in the past. there are vagrants who live inside. the wind, as i mentioned kicking up right now, might spark other fires.
