. >> cnn's robyn kurnow joins us now from south africa. tell us what it was like in the courtroom. >> reporter: you couldn't see his face because we can only broadcast audio. in that courtroom it was very powerful. he was standing up and he seemed trembling, obviously crying, sobbing when he made the statement. what was interesting about it is he turned his back to the judge and directly addressed reeva steenkamp's mother who was sitting there. i couldn't see her face or her reaction on television. it looked like she was quite unemotional, at least on television. as for oscar pistorius, he made a real effort to try and look her in the eye and apologize, so much so that the microphone wasn't picking up enough of his conversation and the judge had to say to him, listen, i know you want to look that way, but you have to address the court and kind of told him to turn around and speak to the court, not to mrs. steenkamp. it was a very powerful piece of -- it was very difficult to watch actually. it felt very intimate, very personal. >> another

robyn, you were inside the courtroom for that dramatic moment. take us through how oscar pistorius described that night, when he killed reeva steenkamp. >> reporter: well, you heard it. you know, and you don't even need the pictures. you don't even need the image of him to get a sense of what was said and how he came across. just that faltering voice. initially, he had been quite composed throughout the day, but the closer and closer he got to that crucial moment where he shot her, his voice became more and more wobbly and, of course, he seemed to -- i noticed throughout the day -- he seemed to hunch over and over and observer as the day got on, but crucially, i think also, he looked directly at the judge through all of this testimony. he was talking to her. she was often piercingly looking back at him. but, however, at that last moment when those details just became too much, you heard it. you didn't need to see it. it was uncontrollable, devastating sobbing. >> just to shed a little light for our viewers about what he says happened that night,

robyn curnow wraps up the testimony with our cnn legal analyst, kelly phelps. >> reporter: this week'sd testimony by oscar pistorius, how did he do? >> at times he seemed to muddy the water of his own defense and was caught in some inconsistencies. just how damaging that ends up being for his case, you can only tell when the defense has presented the rest of their evidence. and we have a con decks against which it e-- context against which to evaluate. it. >> reporter: there was a shift from pistorius' testimony in cross-examination to more expert-led evidence. and this expert that the defense put on was grilled by nel, the state prosecutor. >> yes, we saw questions of the reliability of his evidence, credibility, and reliability of the tests he performed. one needs to put this in context. essentially what nel is trying to do is get the status of his evidence downgraded from official expert evidence because official expert evidence has a higher persuasive value for the court. it's not all about saying he doesn't know everything he's speaking of -- of course he does, he's a world-recogn

robyn curnow, thank you. is cnn legal analyst and trial attorney danny savelos and defense attorney mel robins. as a lawyer, you usually counsel your clients not to take the stand. this is not your average courtroom. it's just a judge. no jury. but still there's got to be a con to taking the stand. >> there always is. in a case like this where the entire trial is based on what were the thoughts going through pistori pistori pistorius' mind when he shot, arguably, you don't have any other way to establish the supposed reasonableness of firing into a closed door in the middle of the night. in most cases, the general rule is don't have your client testify unless, and it's a big unless, unless you need him or her to establish an element of your case. and i think that may be the case here. i mean, no one else in the world can establish what was in his mind when he fired those shots. >> -- did a great job doing that today -- >> except for the whole part of "i'm sorry, i'm sorry." isn't that something you tell your

including our own robyn curnow. us watching on television, it's gut-wrenching, it's horrible to hear his voice. can you give me a little bit more color and fill out the richness of what it must have been like in that courtroom? >> reporter: well, you didn't really need to see anything, did you? it was just so powerful hearing his voice. so being in the courtroom, it was, it was very dramatic. it was gut-wrenching. it was very difficult being part of the gallery, even though you don't have a personal affiliate with either side. you really got a sense of the personal drama, the personal tragedy that has been playing out over the past year. whether or not you think he's guilty or not. i think what was also so key, you know, oscar pistorius initially tried to tell his story coherently. he turned his body to the judge. he looked her in the eye. he was quite composed most of the day. it was just when he hit that really crucial part of the story about what happened and what he felt and saw when he realized it was reeva and
