the investigation impacted the south bay freeways for hours. highway 85 was reopened at 7:30 tonight. >> reporter: the chp did not receive a distress call from anyone in the area before the accident. so a driver's decision to pull over to the shoulder proved to be deadly. this is what is left of a ma da minivan carrying two children and a 41-year-old woman from cupertino. they were parked on the right shoulder of northbound highway 85 just before the accident that killed the young girl who was buckled into her child seat. >> most of the impact on the van is in the right rear where the child was sitting. so the vehicle -- the jeep did travel on to the shoulder and on that dirt embankment and the front of the jeep collided into the minivan and she traveled across all lanes of the freeway. >> reporter: the minivan left skid marks across the freeway. three people were sent to valley medical center. a boy in a booster seat suffered major injuries along with the 56-year-old male driver of the jeep. the female driver of the minivan suffered major inju

hazy sunshine in the south bay. as you know, we've got you covered. every single microclimate in the bay area, right here on nbc bay area. so let me show you some of those. south bay, nice and sunny right now. we have a nice clear sky over the tri-valley. take a look at the lovely green hills in dublin. and now i want to show you that same blue sky, nice and clear in the north bay. so microclimate's not making a big appearance in terms of cloud cover, but your temperatures are starting to see a little bit of a difference. it's much cooler at the coast than what we are expecting inland for today. south bay's at 69. 62 for san francisco. the east bay will hit about 71 degrees. and temperatures going to be a little bit chilly as we head through the next couple of days, considering this time of year, we hit the 70s, low 70s at that. we're going to be just a touch below average. so let's talk about rain. we saw that clock at 6:00 p.m. topper, showers start up in the north bay. all of that activity will start to press south of the golden gate bridge. as we h

it will be just a few more hours before a major intersection in the south bay is open, again. adly crash overnight shut down the entire intersection of almaden expressway and coleman. this is near almaden lake. "today in the bay" bob redell just spoke with investigators on the scene and joins us live now with new information. bob? >> good morning to you, laura. this accident is a fatality. the driver of that black suburban, which you can see up against the power pole there died about an hour and a half ago. he, a man in his 40s collided with another driver whose car is to the left of that scene. you can't see it right now because the sun is back lighting it too much, but that driver, both drivers collide into this intersection just after midnight. police believe that alcohol was involved. the driver of the honda crv that you cannot see, the other car i was mentioning, apparently, according to police, ran the red light and collided with the driver of the black suburban killing the driver of the black suburban who police did believe had the green light. the driver of the honda cr

it will take you into the south bay where we do currently have some blue sky. and the east bay where the wind is, winds 15 to 25 miles per hour. you're going to want to take it easy throughout those bridges. as we head throughout this weekend, we're not done with the rainfall just yet. the storm system that we had for today is now going to be pushing off towards the south. so, again, throughout saturday's forecast, that's going to be moving on out. then as we head throughout sunday we're going to see another storm system move in, and that's going to bring us another chance of some showers. so we take you to the micro climate forecast. we're expecting 67 in napa. santa rosa, 65. sausalito at 68. oakland at 63, fremont, 63. and for the tri valley, temperatures in the mid-60s. danville, 66. the thing that you're going to notice here on the trend as we head throughout the next five days is some erratic changes. while we do have dry weather forecasted for saturday, some sun mixed in. as we head throughout sunday morning we're going to get a few showers mixed in. but

he is apparently unhappy with his home situation here in the south bay. he lives in this house in santa clara with his father and step mom, who you and see denied our request for an interview. it is reportedly a crowded house, too many kids. he argue would his dad about this over the weekend and then ran away with the intent of flying to africa where his biological mother lives. security footage here shows him scaling a fence around 1:00 in the morning sunday. about 12 minutes later shows him climbing into the wheel well of hawaii flight 445. police believe he misunderstood the writing on the plane thinking it would get him to africa with no intention of going to maui. he survived the roughly five-hour flight at extremely high altitude with little oxygen where the temperatures dipped well below zero. he did tell police he passed out and doesn't remember much about that flight. which makes sense, according to medical experts we talked to. >> he was unconscious for most of that flight. >> according to one aviation expert it is possible for a person to fit,
