which is in southern nevada. it's where lifelong rancher cliven bundy has been grazing his cattle for years on what is federal land. he's been doing that without paying the necessary fees. in 1998, a judge ordered bundy to remove his hooved trespassers, and now after nearly two decades, multiple court orders and no cooperation from bundy, the government has stepped in and removed his cattle from the property, rounding them up and keeping them in a holding area nearby. this was no small move. the bureau of land management and national park service mobilized helicopters, trucks and cowboys in order to move the cattle. as you may imagine, this angered the bundy family. the story got picked by conservative groups who see this more as a glaring example of big government run amuck. one of the groups is the nevada army of the koch brothers funded americans for prosperity, which had been running pro-bundy images and messages in the social media accounts. been using the hashtag #bundybattle. they said blm is an agency who

they've been grazing on federal lands in southern nevada for 20 years. now, the land does not belong to this gentleman, mr. bundy, it belongs to the bureau of land management. bundy ranch should have been, should have been, should have been paying land use fees for decades. but wait a minute, folks, we got a problem, houston. cliven bundy doesn't wreck nrec the federal government. >> we run cattle here, graze natural resource off this public land, and i abide by all of nevada state laws, but i don't recognize united states government as even existing. america better wake up if we're going to live in this country with any kind of freedom and liberty. >> well, unfortunately for cliven, the federal government doesn't care what he thinks. you see, bundy was ordered to pay $1 million in back land use fees. 1 million bucks. when bundy refused to pay, through a court order, the federal government seized the cattle. this of course outraged anti-government militias and protesters from nevada and surrounding states. on saturday, they staged an armed demonstration

there's a meeting of the oath-keepers of southern nevada today there's a barbeque at the bundy ranch. alex, this is a very tense situation. that's not being helped by the ratcheting up of this rhetoric. >> i also wonder what you, how you would grade the blm's strategy, if you will. i know you've been critical of them in the past. given how difficult it is t has been to negotiate with people, especially people who are armed with semiautomatic weapons and talking about patriotism and are ready to in their words, lay down their life for this, how difficult a position is the bureau of land management truly in? >> you're absolutely right about that, alex. i agree with you. i think you have to separate out the bundys from all these folks who came from out of state. these militia groups, the oath-keepers, the sovereign citizen folks. the bundys have shown no propensity to be violent at all. but i believe clive bundy and his clan have been emboldened by this and ratcheted up the rhetoric by themselves. the blm is in a difficult position, but they should have never let this go on for 20 years.
