and yemen. they have come just a week or so after the release of a videotape that shows a lot of leadership of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, quite frankly, sitting comfortably at their hideout in yemen, meeting, talking about future plans. that was seen as a huge embarrassment with regard to the counterterrorism efforts of the u.s. and yemen, who for so many years have been trying to vanquish al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. so, the officials that i spoke with yesterday said, yes, this was a response to that. it was a massive and unprecedented response. at least 30 militants have been killed at this stage, and these commandos are on the ground there now trying to go after high-value targets. what's not known is if any of the people who have been killed are, in fact, high-value, very wanted targets from amongst the al qaeda in the arabian peninsula organization. that has yet to be seen, and that will entail dna tests that could take days to confirm. but the operation's still ongoing, and m

is the only country that has carried out these drone strikes in yemen. for perspective, let's turn to cnn analyst peter bergen on how often the u.s. carries out the drone attacks. >> this is part of a campaign that has been going on since president obama assumed office. there have been 91 drone strikes so far under president obama, and 15 other kinds of cruise missile strikes. so more than 100 taken together, this has cost the group dearly. >> now, including today's attack, fred, there have been eight attacks by drone in yemen by the united states this year. back to you. >> and sunlen, several civilians were killed in today's attack. do we know more about those circumstances? >> sources in the region say it's a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. these three civilians were in a car that was right by that pickup truck that was targeted. it's worth recalling, of course, president obama about this time last year, in may of 2013, reorganized united states drone policy. you know, really addressing this issue of collateral civilian damage. now,

it happened in southwestern yemen. right next to the site of yesterday's drone strike that killed ten suspected al qaeda members. a source says saturday's strike was targeting three well-known operatives linked to a terror training camp. following the story for us from washington today. what more do we know about the strike? >> reporter: fred, the yemeni government official confirms to the u.s. that foreign nationals were among the targeted and it was a joint u.s./yemeni operation. now, the strike today took place in the southern province. as you can see here, this wasn't that far from saturday's attack. that attack of confirmed drone strike killed at least ten mill ants and one civilian following the release of an al qaeda training video showing a large gathering of al qaeda in yemen. so far there's no indication that the strikes had anything to do with the video. fred, sources say it's the general area where the u.s. believes that meeting was held. >> and then why is this lakt group of such interest to the united sta

and yemen was in october of 2000. and the u.s.as been launching drones in yemen for more than a decade. 2002, an al qaeda leader and another couple of leaders that were riding in a car got into a traffic accident with a hellfire missile fired by a predator drone and they were killed. so the assistance to yemen to the united states has been ongoing for a long time. then in the recent past, we have the underwear bomber on christmas day 2009. a year later in 2010 we had the attempt to mail printer cartridges with petn, a powerful explosive. and the same explosive that the underwear bomber had. and those were destined for the u.s., specifically a jewish community center in chicago. so this has been a continuing attempt now in what has been in the peninsula to attack the u.s. they've probably been the most aggressive al qaeda affiliate in the world that actually goes after the u.s. rather than just local attacks against their own country. >> so let's talk more about this terror group, al qaeda, in arabian peninsula and how it continues

he's reported extensively from inside yemen. with us as well. mo m mohammed, what's the latest you're hearing? u.s. officials still skeptical. what are you hearing? >> still a lot of questions, but saudi officials telling me today, commenting publicly for the first time that the body of the saudi militant who's linked to aqap who was killed in this firefight with yemeni commandos on sunday night that that body was transported to saudi arabia and that that that's where the dna tests are actually happening. the saudi government officials would not comment as to whether they believed it was him, but they did tell me this could very well be a high-ranking, top-tier saudi aqap target. clearly, he fits that description. but nobody is saying yet because the dna tests could take a couple of days, could take a couple of weeks. a lot of the saudis i've been speaking with privately, they hope it's him, but again, they're not ready to make that comment just yet. >> peter, for the saudis, this is pretty personal given his record not only try

what is -- you won't find a lot of people who will say that al-qaeda in the peninsula in yemen is defeeted, not a threat, not fighting, incapable, you won't find people who say that at this point. you won't find them saying the islamic state, al-qaeda, iraq has not regained, obviously, we know they regained footholds, but the truth is they regained foot hots around iraq. no one argues there's large al-qaeda affiliates in syria. that was one of the reason given traditionally for why we don't support, i don't find it a persuasive reason, but that's an argument made. thatst a large and powerful franchise, and it's clear with operations in north africa that we have a vibrant franchise in al-qaeda, and so on and so on. the question of whether we have affiliates out there and whether they continue to be strong or capable is not really in question. the real question that our policy debates focus around is just the united states needs to care. how much of a problem is it for us if these local groups do well or poorly, and is this something to be concerned about, and that is how do local groups rel
