i'm anne-marie green. the u.s. is joining the hunt for hundreds of kidnapped nigerian school girls. eight more girls were abducted in northeast nigeria by suspected islamic militants yesterday. the u.s. is sending a team of technical experts but no armed forces. the kidnappings and the nigerians' failure to rescue the girls has sparked international outrage. susan mcginnis is in washington with the details. good morning, susan. >> anne-marie, good morning. the new kidnapping are bringing more attention on the nigerians' inability to rescue even wouf these girls who have been separate and may be tougher to find and the growing insurgency. now in a rare move the nigerian government is accepting the u.s.'s help and they say they can except a very, very rapid response. for three weeks they're searching to find hundreds of girls abducted from their dorms. president obama confirmed with megan glaros of our chicago station the white house is now stepping in to help. >> we're sending in a team made up of our milit

i'm anne-marie green. well, overnight firefighters in california battled a string of fast-moving erratic wildfires that forced thousands to evacuate. most are in san diego county where governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency. the most destructive appears to be in carlsbad about 30 miles north of san diego. more than two dozen homes were destroyed and more than 11,000 residents told to evacuate. the carlsbad fire is one of several fires raging throughout the state this morning. in nearby san marcos, 21,000 residents were told to leave as were the students of california state university campus. bigad shaban is in carlsbad and has our report. >> reporter: at least nine fires are burning in carlsbad. this house was charred from the inside out. why helicopters doused flames overnight, the flames have burned more than 2,100 acres. wildfires burned across san diego county. >> there are probably 30- 40-foot flames. >> reporter: dozens of homes were destroyed and thousands of residents were told to e

i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, recovery efforts are under way from the southwest to the great plains. the latest batch of severe weather including tornados and flood-producing rains caused significant damage from texas to minnesota. the storm system is moving east today, but the possibility of more heavy rain, hail, and the chance of tornadoes exists from texas to indiana. yesterday the dallas area was hard hit. the rough weather blew through the dallas area yesterday afternoon. winds clocked at up to 70 miles per hour, toppled trees, crushed cars, and collapsed buildings. >> when we were inside, it felt like it was lifting us, you know. you felt like you were getting lifting like an elevator kind of feeling. >> at one point over 30,000 homes lost power. part of the dallas rapid transit system shut down. the wind tore through homes. one family said there was no time to run. >> it happened really fast. it was actually really scary. >> it was just overwhelming, man. everything happened all at once

i'm anne-marie green. firefighters in arizona made what's described as good progress overnight, fighting a wind-driven wildfire near flagstaff, but the fire has grown to more than 11.5 square miles in a canyon between sedona and flagstaff. 3,200 residents there remain on alert. lindsey reiser of our phoenix station kpho reports on preparations for evacuation. >> reporter: the community meeting tonight was packed with about 300 people in attendance. it was very tense at times as they fear the worst with these evacuations. >> there's a lot of uncertainty. people don't know. you know, there's one road in, one road out. and you've got over 3,000 people. >> i do a bird show at the arboretum at flagstaff. and from what i have heard, the fire is just five miles or sore away from there. >> reporter: most of the people in attendance are from cucina village where they have been told to evacuate but haven't been given the official notice yet. >> i have 30 big animals they need to get out in time, and i just want to m

i'm anne-marie green. this morning a fast-moving wildfire in northern arizona is threatening hundreds of homes. the fire is burning near a state park between sedona and flagstaff, an area popular with tourists. at least seven square miles of land have burned. the smoky wind-driven fire quickly moved up canyon walls and forced the main road between flagstaff and sedona to close. greg argos of our phoenix station kpho says anxious residents are packing up valuable possessions. >> reporter: we're just three miles from the fire line. thick smoke surround this entire area. there are hundreds of homes and thole a mandatory evacuation has not been issued, for many people living here, they're still packing up and getting out. moments after word broke the slide fire had crossed a nearby wash -- >> it was overwhelming, to tell you the truth. >> reporter: -- hundreds of people rushed out of a community meeting to pack their belongings and evacuate. >> get ready, go home, and git 'r done. >> one of those residents is

i'm anne-marie green. lighter winds and lower temperatures are forecast today in southern california where firefighters are battling a slew of destructive wildfires. this morning just in san diego county, seven fires are burning out of control. more than 10,000 acres and more than a dozen homes have been destroyed and a badly burned body has been discovered in carlsbad. since the fires began tuesday, 125,000 evacuation notices have been issued. the city of san marcos is one of the hardest hit. the fire there surged late yesterday. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the fire is burning out of control in san marcos. you can see some of the burned out rubble behind me. the good news is crews are actually starting to gain control of some of the other fires that are burning across san diego county. the question now is what is the weather going to do when the sun rises. from the air and on the ground, firefighters remain focused on san marcos as a raging wildfire continues to consume vegetation and structure

i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. this morning firefighters are battling a fast-moving wildfire in central oklahoma that's destroyed alt least six homes and several other buildings. the fire has burned through at least foursquare miles near guthrie northeast of oklahoma city. the wind-driven fire broke out yesterday afternoon. a man who refused to be evacuated has been found dead in his home. officials say the fire started when someone lost control of what was supposed to be a controlled burn. >> we're not under a burn ban, and out in the county unless there's a county or statewide burn ban, there's really no regulations we have to enforce it. >> fire crews from around the state have been called in to fight the fire. heather hope of our oklahoma city affiliate kwtv is on the fire line where temperatures are expected to reach 97 degrees today. >> reporter: it was a frantic scene for so many residents as they watched their homes go up in flames and with the winds moving the fires so quickly, there was nothing they could

kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is following this from our newsroom and,anne, the bill has been revised and now has the backing of a bay area tech giant. >> reporter: that's right. apple. that's a big turnaround. right now apple has a kill switch option. the bill would make it automatic and that bill hits the senate floor today. >> it's a serious public safety issue and i have defined its as a crime of convenience. if we can end the convenience, we can end the crime. >> reporter: about 75% of all robberies in san francisco and oakland are smartphone- related. a kill switch can make stolen phones inoperable giving thieves no incentive to steal them t owners could erase their them. owners could erase their phone inoperable remotely if it's lost or stolen. if recovered the owner can turn it on and restore its data. 17 state senators including jim beall from san jose opposed the kill switch bill last time around. >> i received a lot of comments from battered women centers. they had concerned about the privacy issue and be able to prevent somebody from stalking. >> reporter: the concern, tha

ann. >> reporter: good morning.e on 6th street and brannan one of the on-ramps that will be closed for several days starting tonight. you can see the low tech sign here behind me and over my other shoulder one of the electronic signs that's been up for a couple of weeks here talking about the closure of 280 southbound starting at 9:00 tonight and running through 5:00 next tuesday morning. here's a map of the area from downtown san francisco to the pennsylvania avenue on-ramp. the southbound closures include the mariposa 18th street, 6th street, brannan and king street on-ramps. there will be detour signs on how to get to highway 101 at the closed ramps. the northbound lanes will stay open but traffic is expected to get pretty backed up in the city depending on the time of day. >> it is going to cause some delays especially here in the downtown area. i believe there's going to be some giants games this weekend. so it will cause traffic to back up. >> reporter: a bridge hinge will be replaced during this closure. that
