i'm anne-marie green. the national football league is facing another lawsuit concerning the long-term health of its players. it was less than a year ago that the nfl settled the case over concussion risks. this time hundreds of retired players charged the league illegally supplied them with risky drugs that led to addiction, and some say they were never told about serious injuries. omar villafranca has our report. >> reporter: eight player are named in the lawsuit including former san francisco 49er jeremy newberry. >> i'm 49 years old and i have kidney problems from playing football. >> reporter: newberry, who also worked as an analyst for station kpix said he received injections to numb injuries during the majority of his injuries during his career. >> it was almost like a cattle call, waiting with your pants down. they're sticking you one at a time as you're walking in and out. >> bears' quarterback jim mcmahon is one of the plaintiffs claiming he suffered nearly a decade later he suffered a broken neck

i'm anne-marie green. the u.s. is joining the hunt for hundreds of kidnapped nigerian school girls. eight more girls were abducted in northeast nigeria by suspected islamic militants yesterday. the u.s. is sending a team of technical experts but no armed forces. the kidnappings and the nigerians' failure to rescue the girls has sparked international outrage. susan mcginnis is in washington with the details. good morning, susan. >> anne-marie, good morning. the new kidnapping are bringing more attention on the nigerians' inability to rescue even wouf these girls who have been separate and may be tougher to find and the growing insurgency. now in a rare move the nigerian government is accepting the u.s.'s help and they say they can except a very, very rapid response. for three weeks they're searching to find hundreds of girls abducted from their dorms. president obama confirmed with megan glaros of our chicago station the white house is now stepping in to help. >> we're sending in a team made up of our milit

i'm anne-marie green. well, overnight firefighters in california battled a string of fast-moving erratic wildfires that forced thousands to evacuate. most are in san diego county where governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency. the most destructive appears to be in carlsbad about 30 miles north of san diego. more than two dozen homes were destroyed and more than 11,000 residents told to evacuate. the carlsbad fire is one of several fires raging throughout the state this morning. in nearby san marcos, 21,000 residents were told to leave as were the students of california state university campus. bigad shaban is in carlsbad and has our report. >> reporter: at least nine fires are burning in carlsbad. this house was charred from the inside out. why helicopters doused flames overnight, the flames have burned more than 2,100 acres. wildfires burned across san diego county. >> there are probably 30- 40-foot flames. >> reporter: dozens of homes were destroyed and thousands of residents were told to e

i'm anne-marie green. this morning folks from the gulf coast in the northeast are waking up to widespread flooding. severe storm system that began t days ago with tornadoes in the midwest. the giant slow-moving weather system is expected to move off the coast later today, but it unleashed record-breaking rainfall over the last 24 hours. the florida panhandle may be hardest hit. it got nearly two feet of rain. hundreds of people there needed to be rescued from the fast rising water, but there is flooding up and down the eastern seaboard. marlie hall is here in new york. marlie, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the storm system that generated killer tornados in the south drenched parts of alabama and florida before wreaking havoc on the east coast. people tried to drive through flooded streets in newark, new jersey after hours of rain from a storm that is dumping record amounts of rain up the east coast. this woman abandoned her car and walked through water up to her knees. other drivers

i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, recovery efforts are under way from the southwest to the great plains. the latest batch of severe weather including tornados and flood-producing rains caused significant damage from texas to minnesota. the storm system is moving east today, but the possibility of more heavy rain, hail, and the chance of tornadoes exists from texas to indiana. yesterday the dallas area was hard hit. the rough weather blew through the dallas area yesterday afternoon. winds clocked at up to 70 miles per hour, toppled trees, crushed cars, and collapsed buildings. >> when we were inside, it felt like it was lifting us, you know. you felt like you were getting lifting like an elevator kind of feeling. >> at one point over 30,000 homes lost power. part of the dallas rapid transit system shut down. the wind tore through homes. one family said there was no time to run. >> it happened really fast. it was actually really scary. >> it was just overwhelming, man. everything happened all at once

i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. this morning firefighters are battling a fast-moving wildfire in central oklahoma that's destroyed alt least six homes and several other buildings. the fire has burned through at least foursquare miles near guthrie northeast of oklahoma city. the wind-driven fire broke out yesterday afternoon. a man who refused to be evacuated has been found dead in his home. officials say the fire started when someone lost control of what was supposed to be a controlled burn. >> we're not under a burn ban, and out in the county unless there's a county or statewide burn ban, there's really no regulations we have to enforce it. >> fire crews from around the state have been called in to fight the fire. heather hope of our oklahoma city affiliate kwtv is on the fire line where temperatures are expected to reach 97 degrees today. >> reporter: it was a frantic scene for so many residents as they watched their homes go up in flames and with the winds moving the fires so quickly, there was nothing they could

i'm anne-marie green. lighter winds and lower temperatures are forecast today in southern california where firefighters are battling a slew of destructive wildfires. this morning just in san diego county, seven fires are burning out of control. more than 10,000 acres and more than a dozen homes have been destroyed and a badly burned body has been discovered in carlsbad. since the fires began tuesday, 125,000 evacuation notices have been issued. the city of san marcos is one of the hardest hit. the fire there surged late yesterday. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the fire is burning out of control in san marcos. you can see some of the burned out rubble behind me. the good news is crews are actually starting to gain control of some of the other fires that are burning across san diego county. the question now is what is the weather going to do when the sun rises. from the air and on the ground, firefighters remain focused on san marcos as a raging wildfire continues to consume vegetation and structure

i'm anne-marie green. this morning, we are learning about a near, midair collision at one of america's busiest airports. we have the details. good morning. >> good morning. this happened last month at newark liberty international airport. it involved two planes, one landing and the other taking off on intersecting runways. a united jet was landing on the east/west runway. by the time the jet started down the run way, the other jet was a mile away. the united jet was told to abort its landing. they came within 200 feet laterally and 400 feet vertically. 155 passengers and six crew members on the united flight. the expressjet flight carried 47 passengers and three crew. >> this could have been a catastrophic and horrific event. it was the air traffic controller who finally recognized that these two aircraft were converging upon each other. he gave the order to united airlines aircraft to abort its landing. at that point, the other aircraft recognized, it needed, even though he was in the air, he could not cl

ann marie told us that she loves her job. she works at the university of massachusetts-amherst, but since the day that she started, the day she started she made a lower salary than her male counterpart who is doing the exact same job. they had the same responsibilities and both of them had taken a pay cut to accept that job and they both graduated from the same university in the same year. well, when ann marie found this out that he was making more than she was, even though they had the exact same resumes and qualifications and year of graduation, she went in and asked for a raise and she was told she couldn't have one. well, she stayed on at that job and continued to work hard, and it wasn't until her husband's job was at risk that she started thinking about how much those lost wages meant to her and her family. she ran the numbers and she found out that over the years, she had missed out on more than $12,000 in wages compared to her male counterpart who was doing the exact same work. ann marie and her husband are first gene

we would like to work you through a summary and please note anne marie will have additional information after me about the planning, building and code amendments. on the first, we removed the use of the word "insulary." and clarified that city plasas as defined in the proposed sense of the administrative code would be principally permitted when found to be in confirmity with the general plan. we heard several concerns about the potential negative impacts of formula retail in plaza, so we amended the legislation to require conditional use authorization for accessory use defined as formula retail in any approved plazas. the question rose how will you le sure plazas do not contain inappropriate structures? we have addressed this concern by making amendments to both the administrative code and planning code. in the administrative code we added an open space height and bulk designation requirement, whichly detail in a moment. there the planning code, we added additionly language to clarify that any structures could only occupy limited space if any and will have several new layers to address

i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. this morning we're learning just how close police came to stopping elliot rodger before he went on a murder spree in california friday night. his parents knew their son was in trouble. they had seep chilling online videos threatening suicide and violence. they notified authorities and raced to his side the night of the attack, but were too late. police had visited rodger three times, the last time a month ago, to check on his mental health. in a chilling manifesto rodger wrote investigators never searched his apartment. he was relieved because, quote, that would have ended everything. for a few seconds i thought it was all over. rodger convinced the officers he was okay. >> he was polite and courteous. he was able to convince the deputies that this was all a misunderstanding. >> police say rodger's first victims were killed in his apartment. cheng yuan honk, george chen and wehan wang were stabbed to death. rodger suffered from mental illness and was under the care of a therapist. pol

i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. this morning an escalation of the fighting in ukraine. it appears ukrainian military has launched a major assault against pro-russian forces in eastern ukraine. the target is an insurgent stronghold about 100 miles west of russian. fighting is ongoing around several points around the city. they've seized government buildings in and around a dozen cities. the government says at least one helicopter was shot down. one pilot was captured. the other was killed. ukrainian government says surface-to-air missiles were used. counteri ining russia claims th uprising was led by civilians. yesterday vladimir putin. hour after that ukraine's military draft was renewed. earlier this week ukraine's acting president said his security forces were helpless against the pro-russian insurgents. >> this morning the acting malaysian minister says he's sure the search for malaysian flight 370 is on the right track but yesterday he released a report on the disappearance. it documented the confusion on the jet's location. susan mcginnis is in washington with the

anne marie rodgers again, i will focus on the current version of the planning code amendments and they are as follows col cot the planning code amendments proposed are liped to those uses that are permitted or conditionally permited in p public use districts with a particular focus on accessory uses, et cetera. the program seeks to enable the city to partner with community stewards to help acted vate and maintain these public plazas. in addition, to the planning code changes the administrative code, public works code and police code are all being amended to address this program. let's talk about what is currently in the planning, building and code? currently accessory ices uses for these districts -- currently p districts are required to be in confirmity with the general plan and if it's located in a quarter of a mile of restricted neighborhood district, there are additional restrictions. to maintain the policy considerations which are otlined in the general plan and in the report before you. but they would place additional restrictions on accessory use in the p districts and, in fact,

i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. this morning a slow moving storm system threatens the midwest with another round of severe weather. today's threat follows a weekend of damaging tornados and heavy snow. winter storm warnings are in effect in colorado and wyoming. in the midwest and plains, folks are cleaning up after dozens of damaging storms. several twisters touched down in south central nebraska causing heavy damage. there were preliminary reports of 34 tornadoes yesterday in nebraska, iowa, kansas, and indiana. late sunday several tornados caused heavy damage in southern nebraska. at least one person was injured. homes were torn apart, trees snapped in half, and power lines blown over. late saturday a tornado took dead aim at the missouri town of orrick just east of kansas city. the twister had winds of up to 135 miles per hour, damaging up to 300 homes. >> i pulled up, got the kids out, down in the basement, and then literally like two minutes after that, we were all down in the basement and everything started h
