brian rooney joins us now. brian, good to see you, how are firefighters doing with the fire there and in other areas? they seem to be knocking it back. we are in the parking lot, and the firefighter is basically burned flu the hills all around us. a few flames wouldn't you know they went away, but there's flames up in the hills and i see some to my left as well. they are fighting this mostly from the air. i haven't seen a firefighter on the ground up in the hills yet. bass from the air if you can fight it from the air it is the best way to do it. >> i would guess state officials are really concerned for the rest of this fire season. >> they are -- it's hard to evaluate that. because there are years in california when there's early season concern, and it turns out to be not much. it is kind of the luck of the draw. but, california has this historic drought going on, the hills are really dry. and when you get weather like today, it is 100 degrees here, the humidity in the brush goes way down, and that's when it bu

>> brian rooney joins us from isla vista, not far from santa barbara. how would you describe the atmosphere there? >> the atmosphere is both normal and abnormal at the same time. we are in the area near the campus. people are going by on skateboards and bicycles. yet the spontaneous memorial behind me where one of the victims was shot and killed seems to be growing by the hour. so they're living their lives and mourning at the same time. we talked to several students and to the local priest whose parish is right in the middle of the students area. >> you hear about this happening at other schools and you never expect it to happen at your school until it does. >> most young people never think they're going to die. they've oftentimes never really experienced a brush with death. and this, for many, is their first trauma of this sort. >> father love said that, he advised that people who saw what happened that night or had some close experience with it get their story out and talk about it. and not let it just linger and be silent about it. >> brian, this is

joining us from san marcos, california, al jazeera correspondent brian rooney. the fire there grew from 1200 acres to now around 3,000. they are having some success containing it. >> they are. the weather is not quite as hot, not quite as windy. these things tend to blow up and then kind of mysteriously kind of damp down. the actual damage to houses has not been that bad. we're standing in front of a housing that burned to the ground. but only seven or eight houses in a i have widespread area of the san diego area have burned. which is surprising considering the number of acres that have burned. but this morning a big fire blew up on camp pendleton and you can 23 see that back in the horizon, a big black plume. they're calling it 8,000 acres in the morning but considerably more than that as the day goes on. that's a considerable area that's burning but camp pendleton is generally a wild reservation, they're evacuating the remote camps they have on the base but so far we're not getting of damage to any structures on the base. >> brian, you said there were smaller

brian rooney joins us from san marcus, california.ut 20 minutes ago we weren't shure you were going to be able to join us. explain what happened. >> about a half hour ago, we were waiting to go on live. there's a ravine right down here behind me, and we were keeping an eye on, and within about two minutes it came right up behieng me. and i was standing right there on the edge of the ravine. and the whole area burned out. so it was exciting for a few minutes there. >> how is southern california doing? are these fires in control or out of control right now? >> well, that's a technical question. they will give a percentage of how much of a line has been drawn around a fire. but you can get an idea as to whether they are out of control. some are, some are not. but even out of control doesn't mean they are necessarily burning anything. and i think what has been remarkable about this set of fires is how few houses it has actually burned. we're in the middle of a residential area, high up in the hills. there are houses all over the hills, an

marcos california is brian rooney, al jazeera correspondent. thank you for joining us. that is where a fire broke out. forcing a university to close down. with the winds and textures nearing 100 degrees, what are the firefighters telling you. >> it's hard to fight fire. when it's 100 degrees, and the humidity is low. they attack it from the air. helicopters, aircraft, firefighters don't get out ahead of a fire on the ground. it's far too dangerous. have you to depend partly upon the terrain and wind and weather, and good luck to coral and contain it. >> how many people have been evacuated. damaged? >> the evacuations are a shifting number. figures - 20,000 homes outside san diego. yesterday and today about 13,000, it's in numbers of homes, not people. the damage - so far, we'll get better numbers in a report. so far not that many houses have burnt, considering the amount of ground that burnt. it's 14 square miles of area that the fires burnt through. only a handful of houses and complex burnt, several counting. >> the fire department chief, which was an area worst hit.

brian rooney has been following the story from isla vista. what has been said about the suspect's previous run ins with the law? >> he has had other odd run-ins. he accused a room-mate of stealing $22 of candles and exercised a citizen's arrest. the day the deputies visited him it was april 30th, they talked to him. they thought he seemed normal or at least not harmful to himself or anyone else. the sheriff talking about that. >> told them he was having social problems and school issues and probably was not going to continue in school. and told them it was a misunderstanding, that his relative and this other person had taken things the wrong way, and he was not going to hurt anybody or himself, and was able to convince the deputies that he was not a danger to himself or other people. >> reporter: keep in mind at the same time he had three guns and 400 rounds of ammunition, probably in that apartment at the time of that interview. >> the sheriff mentioned other people. we understand that it was a family member of the suspect who tipped police

brian rooney joins us with more from santa barbara. good morning. what do we know about this suspected shooter? >> his family's lawyer went before the press and said he has as burger sint room and a -- syndrome and a history of mental illness. the father of a victim, about an hour ago, spoke to the press unexpectedly. his son, christopher martinez was among those killed and it was very emotional for a few minutes. >> you don't think it will happen to your child until it does. chris was a really great kid, ask anyone who knew him. his death has left our family lost and broken. why did chris die? >> because of craven irresponsible politicians and the e.r. a. they talk about gun rights. what about chris's right to live. when will this insanity stop. when will enough people say "stop this madness, we don't have to live like this.". >> reporter: now, the weapon used was a handgun. we don't know anything about that. we are hoping to learn more. as for the shooter - there had been signals in recent days. he put postings on facebook and the internet, he was

. >> brian rooney reporting there. the weather in california has only made matters worse for the last few days. rebecca stevenson is here with a check on those conditions. >> meteorologist: we're watching very dry air start to move out. things are changing and the wind is shifting. as we look at our water vapor satellite, winds shifting, bringing onshore flow, and it's brought humidity up 50% in san francisco. but still only on the coast are we seeing improvement that will aids in firefighting. we're getting the low humidities down 3%, 4%, you can see the westerly winds coming in for california, but they're also shifting into arizona. the winds are easing for california but they're increasing from a different direction. our temperature change, it's mall today, 3% for los angeles, but it's going to get greater as we go through the weekend for california, and as we get into our southwest interior, that's where temperatures will stay in the triple digits through sunday. with those winds beginning to pick up we'll look at

brian rooney reports from san marcos where residents don't have much to return to. >> what's remarkable given the number of fires and they're intensity and the size of the burning area is how few houses actually burned to the ground. this unfortunately was one of them. this was a bi big front door. house was three or 4,000 feet. big plume of smoke coming out of camp pendleton today. the house rambles along there, blue trash can, parts of the window casings are just kind of melted into the ground around you can feel the heat coming out of the driveway even a day after this happened. it all this is just a hot spot here. houses like this get taken out when everything around it stands, just because of the contours of the way the fire burns up the hillside and the sparks take out a house just like a rocket. conditions have been a little bit more favorable in the last 24 hours. it's windy now but not as windy as it has been. the temperatures are cooling. the predictions are that the temperatures are trending downwards and even by tuesday the temperatures will be in the 70ss very favorable for

brian rooney joins us live from santa barbara. brian, what can you tell us about what's happening so far? >> reporter: isla vista is the off-campus student residential area. it's paradise for students there. on a friday night, there would be a lot of people on the streets. so this started about 9:30 last night when the black bmw pulled up in front of a group of people and the driver opened fire. in the next couple of minutes, there were a lot of police in the area. they always are on the weekends. and there ended up being nine locations where shots were fired. the gunman ended up dead in his car. the police have not identified him officially azle i don't want roger, but they are looking at his youtube posting that we just heard a clip from, things that he said on his facebook, that girls were not interested in him and he was despairing about that. but it was the youtube posting yesterday that -- in which he just posted a direct threat about what he was going to do -- attempt to do. >> i haafter i have annihilated every single girl
