dan barber was evacuated from the hotel next door. >> the next thing you know, someone is running down the hall. firemen are evacuating us. >> reporter: the hood of the big rig blew up as driving down the 15th street. the driver drove across the median and ruptured one fuel tank before impact. >> all of a sudden there was a huge balm of flames but they put it out very quickly. >> reporter: the driver and a passenger escaped the cab. one was treated at a local hospital for a broken leg. it's not clear how fast the driver was traveling, or where the fire erupted before the crash. the accident shut down the busy westbound lanes on the spot for about twelve hours. as crews contained 150 gallons of diesel fuel and removed the wreck. >> we've never had anything like this. been a few feet more, the mortuary would have been gone. >> reporter: the funeral home celebrated 90 years last month. >> we have a couple of funerals planned for tomorrow, but they're both at the churches. and so they're away from the funeral home. >> reporter: the food distributor operating the big rig did not return our
