they're standing by, along with cnn's tom foreman. first, let's go to kuala lumpur, our senior international correspondent nic robertson has the latest. what does the report reveal? >> reporter: wolf, the most stunning revelation appears to be in the actions taken when the plane went missing between 1:38 a.m. and 6:14 a.m. for two hours, malaysian airlines operation center is misreading its own computer, telling air traffic control the flight was in fact over cambodia, they were tracking it and in communications with it. that turned out to be an error, lasting over two hours. there is a full recording of the air traffic control to cockpit voice recording. that's the first time we're hearing that. there's maps of the routes. there's a cargo manifest, we knew that. there is a passenger manifest and, of course, the interim report adding a few more details what it does do along with the air traffic recordings is detail the last hours of the flight. >> mas 370 is cleared to beijing via pibos. >> reporter: 12:41 a.m., saturday march 8th. ma

here's tom foreman. >> one of the most dangerous circumstances for wildfir wildfire fighters is the dayand the winds are unstable and fires can be pushed one way very quickly or they can be pushed back the other way. but how does all this come together to create a fire whirl or some people call it a fire tornado? essentially the fire burns into a very hot source of fuel, 1,500 to 2,200 degrees fahrenheit would be typical. and then in this changing environment a pocket of cold air appears overhead. and all of that heat starts rushing up toward it. and as it meets the cooler air, it does what they do in tornado situations, the two types of air start swirling around each other and you get that circular motion. meanwhile, it starts sucking in more combustible gases from the ground and as they rise up, they burst into flames. it tightens in and gets faster and there you get your fire tornado. it's not actually a true tornado in that a tornado would be hundreds of miles an hour and it would be much more powerful than this. they do occur that way but very, very rarely. this is more like a dust

tom foreman is out front. and tom, you know, this leak didn't just happen. why it is getting so much attention now? >> it happened back in february. and there was some news of it happening. what has happened now is they have a better sense through their early investigation of what happened. and that is what is raising all this agitation. at issue, 57 barrels of nuclear waste from work on weapons at los alamos labs. sludge, workers gloves, clothing and other items contaminated with plutonium and amarisium. they fear the way this stuff is being handled represents an imminent and substantial threat to the public, and here is why. at least one of the barrels broke open when something made it unexpectedly heat up. it happened about 2200 feet below ground after several of the barrels had been transferred from los alamos to this federal nuclear storage site. the incident in february forced officials to temporarily keep workers off that part of the site and test them. 22 came up positive for low level exposure. so how could organic cat litter be to blame? cat litter

let's check in now with tom foreman on a look at how the fires form. >> headlillo, anderson, as you one dangerous things for a land firefighter is where the weather and winds are unstable. where one moment they can push a fire in one direction, the other, a different direction. how does all that come together to create one of these fire whirls or fire tornadoes as people like to call them. essentially what happens is a fire burns into a hot bed of fuel. so it may be at 15, 2200 degrees temperature. that would not be uncommon. and then a colder air mass comes overhead and all the heat is drawn up toward that colder area. the cold air and the hot air hit each other just like they do in a tornado and they start to swirl. and that starts drawing in more combustable gases and flames. this goes 20 to 30 miles an hour in rotation. that is nothing like a tornado, depending on what you're talking about, which part of the storm. nonetheless this can be dangerous because this thing can go horizontal and start shooting out across the ground. and in doing this it can be like a blow torch of thousand

tom foreman is "outfront." and tom, you know, these two planes in texas, they still had room to maneuver past each other. but it's really too close for comfort. >> it really is. let me bring in the airport and talk about how this developed. it is a study in space and speed. when they took off from this airport, it looked like everything was fine. they were going in different directions. everything was going off just swimmingly. then this change in direction, and now the problem came about. now, you can look at this and say look, there is still not exactly the same elevation. they're still separated by about a mile between the two of them. so really, why is anybody worried about this sort of thing? well, the reason they're worried about this sort of thing is because if they had continued this direction, remember, they're traveling about 170 miles per hour, they could have reached a collision point out here in maybe 10 seconds more or less. so this really is quite close. and the reason air traffic controllers kne

tom foreman is in washington to begin our coverage.nt is going to join me shortly. tom, first all these columns here of pretakeoff and post takeoff, what is in the 47 pages? >> what is in it first of all, erin is exactly what you said, what the families had been wanting, 47 pages of raw satellite date that that inmarsat used to track this plane after it disappeared. these numbers were used to measure the way that a ground station sent a message up to a satellite up above the indian ocean, which in turn relayed that message over to the plane, electronically asking are you there and how the plane responded. and these 14 numbers in particular allow us for the first time to see the plane's movement long after every other tracking source had lost it. each one of these lines across here represents one of those electronic handshakes between the satellite and the plane. and you can see, if you look over here how those numbers get bigger each hour. look at that. steadily moving up. what does that mean? it means the transmission time between the
