our national security correspondent, jennifer griffin, is on the phone and joins us now. and jennifer, it's got to be good news to the family, secretary of defense, chuck hagel releasing the details that sergeant bergdahl is being released. what are the conditions of that release? >> reporter: kelly, i've just spoken to a senior u.s. defense official who tells me that bowe bergdahl is in good shape, in germany right now. he is, according to the official, has lost some weight. he is scared. he clearly is a little disoriented and weakened after years of being held in captivity by the taliban. what i understand, not only from a statement that's recently been released by defense secretary chuck hagel, but also from senior u.s. defense officials who have spoken to today, is that the release is the result of negotiations and a trade. it was a trade to release five prisoners afghan and taliban prisoners from guantanamo bay. they are en route back to afghanistan. and, of course, bowe bergdahl is being seen in germany by u.s. military officials, and getting medical treatment at th

and drew griffin joins us, what do you think about what the president said today? >> you know i think that the veterans will have to wait eastern longer to get care while the president studies the issue, anderson. the fact is, veterans in this country have been waiting too long to get doctor's appointments. that is a fact. another fact is the v.a. has known that the offices out here in the country have been cooking the books to try to hide the numbers. those are facts that come from so those are facts already out there. in the past six months whistle-blowers have come forward and have told us, they have talked to the inspector general, reporting that due to delays in care deaths have occurred as a result. the v.a. has admitted 23 deaths due to delays. now, i just want to tell you, anderson, who this is harming, and while many believe the president's speech today was completely inadequate. last night here in phoenix i talked to a physician at the phoenix v.a. who runs the post-deployment clinic. dr. katherine mitchell. and i had to ask her twice because i couldn't b

national security correspondent jennifer griffin live in d.c. we understand you have some new details on bergdahl's release. >> reporter: that's right. we have just learned that it was u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s who were the one who is met the taliban in that eastern afghanistan town, and they are the ones who basically flew him back to kabul, afghanistan. i'm told it was a very emotional scene on the helicopter when the navy s.e.a.l.s placed bergdahl on the aircraft. it feels about 10:30 a.m. eastern time. they received him from 18 armed taliban but no shots were fired during the handover. according to a senior u.s. defense official, bergdahl was disoriented and confused. he took a pen and wrote on a paper plate writing instead of talking because it was so loud on board the helicopter. ss, he wrote, meaning special forces? the operators, the s.e.a.l.s sitting with him, responded loudly over the noise of the rotor blades saying, yes, we've been looking for you for a long time. bergdahl then reportedly broke down crying. bergdahl i'm told was in a weake
