legislation that i introduced which again has the support of the american legion dav vietnam vets veterans of foreign wars iraq and afghanistan veterans of america paralyzed veterans of america. he is right it costs money. he is writes this country has a deficit. he would be right if he said that those -- going to war in iraq and afghanistan has cost us trillions of dollars which is one of the reasons we have a deficit we have today. but i believe from the bottom of my heart madam president that if we go to war if we spend trillions of dollars on that war that when our men and women come home from war some wounded in body and someone did in spirit i don't want people telling me it's too expensive to take those wounded veterans. i don't accept that. if you think it's too expensive to take care of veterans don't send them to war. so madam president let me reiterate my view as the senator from florida has raised an important issue. we want to address it as quickly as we can and we are going to address other issues facing our veterans who on this memorial day need to know that we are there for them and their families. >> madam president how much time remains?

veterans said senator burr's letter was full of cheap political attacks. the vfw calls senator burr's letter disgusting. the paralyzed vets of america pointed out that senator burr has opposed legislation for a number of veterans programs and wrote, "you clearly represent the worst of politics in the country." opposing programs for vets and then attacking the groups that help them, it's ugly and not what we should see coming out of this tragedy. joining me now is vermont's independent senator, bernie sanders, chairman of the senate committee on veterans affairs. senator sanders, thanks for being here tonight. >> my pleasure. >> nor, one of your colleagues going after the veterans groups back in february he and 40 other republicans blocked a bill you proposed to expand health care programs for vets. how can they justify that, senator? >> well, al, that's a great question. this was according to the veterans organizations the most comprehensive veterans legislation introduced in decades, legislation that addressed health care, dental care, education, employment, the family needs of veterans back home. it was a bill that had the support of every single major veterans or

of foreign wars hit back. for years, the vfw has come and we've heard the same old story. the national president and executive director of the paralyzed veterans of americaeaded, "perhaps you should have shared with all veterans in your open letter that you cared so much about their health care that you were not actually present during the testimony that the representative provided and you did not ask a single question." we will go to robert in virginia beach. a recent graduate. what was your degree in? caller: i graduated in december of 2013 with a bachelor's in political science. host: you have a job? caller: i do. thinknder what i would would be a desirable salary. host: what are you making? caller: nine dollars an hour. host: where are you working? caller: a call center. it's something to do for now. if i don't find something better by december, i'm looking at maybe a masters in public policy or going to law school. an hour at allars call center. what is the call center? caller: they sell those things to all people when they fall down and they hit the button so the ambulance shows up. host: what is your student loan situation like? caller: i owe abou
