businessman, tom wolf, defeated, allison schwartz for the democratic nomination.f will take on republican tom corbin in november. lots more about that from me. let's talk about the senate right now. the kentucky/georgia senate races are so important to democrats. right now democrats have 55 seats in the senate there are 12 states with competitive senate races this november. and 10 of them. see them there on the mark. the map in blue. democrats are playing defense. in other word, democrats in the seats now. they got to hold them. republicans need a again of six seats to take over the senate. to make it 51 for them. already, three states, montana, south dakota, west virginia. look to be easy pickups. nothing is for sure. republicans will need to net another three of the remaining nine states. kentucky/georgia in the red on the map are the only states where democrats have a chance to pick up a republican held seat. joining me is nbc news political director, chuck todd. chuck, i keep thinking this is precarious for the democrats. if they lose, they lose control. they

tom wolf is running away from it. he has from the beginning. he went on the ad with all positive stuff starting the first week of february and he was uncontested for seven weeks. he had so much more money. he's a self-funder and he had so much more money than his two main competitors that he was able to outspend them 2-1 on t.v. against allison schwartz and one and a half against rob mccord. >> this is tom corbett's worst nightmare. if he could have picked a candidate it would have been schwartz, not wolf. >> you have the vision of republicans attacking a guy for being too good at capitalism in order to get schwartz perhaps. >> right. and very quickly, marjorie margolis, an inlaw to the clintons, both bill and hillary have campaigned for her. she's in a very tight race. could she lose? >> she could definitely lose. she's had very little voter contact, she spent a lot of her money on consultants and has very little to go on, and there's candidates with bases going against her, including one guy that represents northeast philly in the statehouse.

and not the guy in the white suit who writes great books, but a different tom wolf.y thought that alison schwartz and long time congresswoman, and interviewed for numerous times by both you and i, and she would take advantage of the most high profile woman in the race, and she never got off of the ground. maybe seen too much philadelphia, and there is a fine line in pennsylvania, because philadelphia is important in the primaries, but if you look too philadelphia, you will lose traction in the western part of the state in some of the thing, and kit cit e tough. ed rendell is the first philadelphiian governor to be re-elected statewide. and so alison schwartz is finding out the worst. tom wolf is the worst nightmare, because he is a business guy, and not connected to washington or connected to president obama too much. might be the ideal candidate democrats could come up with to knock corbett off. >> in the few seconds left, i want to ask you about president obama, and he has had a busy fund-raising event in maryland and two more next month and how much of the preside

tom wolf is an extraordinary candidate.line is if you look at governor corbett in pennsylvania, his numbers are in the tank. they're in the tank because since he's been governor, pennsylvania turned to job creation has gone from 7th in the nation to 47th in the nation, it's a state where he's slashed $1 billion from education, decimated schools, hurt taxpayers and the working folks of pennsylvania. while he's done that, he's also said, hey, you know, gay marriage, marriage equality is the equivalent of incest. he's taken legal action to stop marriage equality in pennsylvania, he has ensured that really the folks who desperately need to be lifted up in this economy, the middle class, working pennsylvanians working hard have been hit in the teeth. we have candidate who says i'll restore education and i'll pay for it by taxing the oil companies and gas companies that are doing just fine in pennsylvania right now and change the dynamic so that working, middle class families have a shot. >> you brought up marriage equality a cou

business man tom wolf was accused of buying the election. he won with a huge ad campaign and have a chance to go up against tom corbett in the fall. another note in pennsylvania. chelsea clinic's mother-in-law, marjorie margolis was trying to get back in congress but lost her primary. in oregon, we're watching the gop primary between a neurosurgeon and a september representative. we have about a quarter of the country's primaries completed. still a lot more races to be called. as of this moment not a single incumbent has lost a tea party primary. in both parties every single incumbent has won their primary. >> carl, let me ask you one quick question going back to kentucky where you started earlier, matt bevin yesterday called mitch mcconnell a present conservative, people are hungry for somebody that's real not the same plastic nonsense. >> it's been very nasty. >> will he unite behind mcconnell? >> reporter: of course he will. mcconnell was very generous in his victory speech and asked his audience of support towers give a round of applause
