camera rolling during a undercover sting and ktvu's eric rasmussen is here with what that investigation revealed. >> reporter: you can't tell if it has been tampered with by looking at the mileage but the dmv says half the cars had odometers that were rolled back or replaced. the owner of the deepertion sold a-- dealership sold one of the cars to an under cover investigator. >> reporter: anything to say for yourself? >> for what? >> reporter: are you rolling back the odometers? >> i don't know what you are talking about. >> reporter: that is hard to believe. moments before officers put him in handcuffs. 2 investigates reported him closing a deal. his customer an under cover investigator with the dmv, ready to pay cash, $4,500 for a car with 115,000 miles. >> investigator says he is excited because the mile subject so low and the reply is because i put a new engine in it. >> reporter: but that doesn't change the myelin. the mini -- mileage on it. the minivan had 260,000 miles. it was rolled back 150,000 miles. authorities moved in as soon as the sale was complete. >> i don't trust them.

ktvu's eric rasmussen heard from both sides of the debate today, live now in oakland with the recent crimes raising concerns. >> reporter: julie, in one of those cases, intruders used zip ties on a man while they robbed him in his own home. despite that, the extra eyes and ears of private patrol have helped, but others are yet to buy in. 2:00 in the afternoon in oakland, a woman punched in the face and robbed. >> i feel dreadful. i wish i could have done something, you know. >> reporter: within the hour, a mile away in the upper diamond, two masked men with guns walked into the open door of a home on harding way. on the glenview neighborhood facebook page, the victim wrote, they told me to get down on the floor and zip tied my hands behind my back. private security was on duty, but the patrolman was on another street. >> i think if they were doing their job, you can't be everywhere at every moment. >> reporter: tracy mckendall helped organize private security in the neighborhood. homeowners each pay 400 to $500 a year for the services of security code 3, a guard with the same company
