. >> for more on this grave situation issue we go live to conner powell in gaza city. g. both sides spend a lot of time blaming each other. there is a lot of blame to go around. the one thing that is very certain here is that the death toll is increasing. the violence is growing. the path, 36, 48 hours, heavy fighting. last night we heard heavy artillery shelling of different parts of gaza. particularly folks in the northeastern part. but focusing also in the central part as well. there is a really thick smoke last night, i could smell the artillery throughout the air last night. the palestinian death count is rising. now well over 560. it's increasing nearly close to 600 or so. the israeli side also suffering some significant losses here. israeli military, according to officials, saying now 27 soldiers have been killed. the real nightmare scenario for the israeli military is developing. there are reports of a missing soldier. hamas claims two days ago they had captured an israeli soldier. but the israeli military saying no the soldier is just missing, it's not captured

we have team fire coveraging and first we go to conner powell who is standing by in gaza city, conner? >> reporter: both sides talk about the others treat civilians. it supports the claims from the palestinians and israelis. the israelis claim that the hospital is used by hamas as a commanding place to control center and rockets and after days of warnings and telling doctors to remove all patients the israeli attack the hospital. we see the bombing where we are seeing reported fighting in the eastern part of the gaza strip. and now the attack on the hospital came and military saying that this was because the hospital is used by hamas and the israeli military attacked it and bombed it. and hamas still trying to use as a command and control center and proof that the military said hamas is using civilian targets and sites to attack israel. in a separate incident we saw an is slammic cultural center that was attacked without warning or notice by the israeli military. one man was killed and 40 other people were injured. both according to both sides proof of how the other treats civilians a

for the latest on the ground we turn now to fox's own conner powell. he's standing by tonight in gaza city, conner? >> sean, we have seen this expansion of the military operation here by israel in the last 24 hours as you said, we have seen many more air strikes, they hit the main television, the hamas main television channel in addition to a home run by -- or owned by a senior hamas official. also that power station. but we're seeing strikes on other targets as well. and we understand that hamas is saying, until their demands are met, there will be no stopping them. we're hearing on the israeli side that many officials are saying, this is the chance to defeat hamas once and for all. it looks like we are set for a much bigger expansion of the fighting here, we continue to have rockets fired from gaza into israel. the death toll here is up over 1100 palestinians. a lot of children, 53 soldiers have been killed here. the israeli military continues to focus on those tunnels. the military now saying they think they're about 60% done with destroying most of

conner powell, live from gaza city, what will it take to get to a ceasefire?porter: we spent the last 24 hours or so trying to see if the humanitarian ceasefire that lasted 12 hours yesterday could be extended. israel offered ex-tentension of that, hamas said no. we saw heavy fighting today but not like the past four, five days. we saw about a dozen or so hamas rockets fired from gaza to israel. we also heard and saw israeli artill parts here. for the last sort of two or three hours, it has been very quiet here now. of course, israel is expanding military operations, focusing mainly on tunnels and launch sites in areas where they already are in gaza now. they have not expanded to gaza city or some other areas. israel is continuing to conduct military operations here, focusing on tunnels. hamas said we would reject a ceasefire where the israelis are allowed to continue to operate here. looks like both sides settled into a semi permanent ceasefire. the question is will it hold until tomorrow. both sides are under a lot of pressure to approve some long term cease

first to conner powell in gaza city on how folks there are dealing with the ban. >> reporter: we understand really for the first time in the past several days where efforts have been under way to try to negotiate some type of ceasefire, there are intense ceasefire talks going on right now, but so far nothing has been agreed to, but we're seeing intense battles here in gaza. one of the amazing things is the israeli stated position here is to try to end all rockets from hamas being fired from the gaza strip into israel. we're still seeing a real strong volley, a consistent volley of rockets being fired from hamas into israel. that's part of the reason why that travel ban is still in place. israel continues to hit hamas targets. there's several spots near where we are located where hamas has tried to fire rockets and consistently has been doing that. israel has hit that spot, a couple hours, a couple days later we still see rockets being fired from that same spot. israel hits it again. there's a constant back and forth here happening not only across us but across the entire gaza strip. secreta

fox news correspondent conor powell live in gaza city with the very latest. conner is, there any sense that there is a cease-fire? >> greta, just the opposite, a cease-fire cannot come here soon enough because the violence the conflict here is growing. in the past few days, put this in perspective. the past few days of the 225 israeli troops that were killed throughout this operation, 20 of them have come in the past few days. 571 palestinians killed more than 200 of those deaths came in the past 488 hours it has inat the bus stop find here despite israel's best efforts. and you can hear behind me there are still artillery reigning in here in gaza. still rockets being fired from gaza by hamas in to israel. the intense fighting here taking place and really in the northeastern part of the gaza strip, which is where hamas has a lot of bunkers and there are a lot of tunnels. it's an area where israeli special forces and troops have been concentrating a lot of their effort. we are seeing intense conflict all across the gaza strip. and as a result, greta, we've seen a hug
