al jazeera's jane araf. >> kurdish forces are on higher alert than normal following a rare explosion.fficials say a sticky bomb attached to the under carriage of a car detonated on the main road in the city. this is the peshmerga. kurdish forces fight on several fronts to try to retake territory from the islamic state group. one is the town of jallulah, 20s kilometers from the border in northeast iraq. iranian forces are said to have backed the kurdish fighters. the iranian foreign minister has arrived in back dad for talks with his counterpart as well as to congratulate the new prime minister. the prime minister has a tough job on his hands. he is trying to contain the fallout of what is being termed ama massacre at a sunni mosque. >> one being blamed on shia militia members. it's not entirely clear who exactly is responsible but the government has vowed to bring whoever is to justice. all of that is jeopardies efforts to form a government within the deadline that they need to form a new iraqi government that includes sunnis, kurds and all of the other faxes to try to tackle security

al jazeera's jane araf has more. >> reporter: the latest were some time ago, but they appeared to havead their desired effect with the mesh americaa retake -- peshmergat it's on the road to the capital of the oil fields 40 kilometers southwest of erbil. there had been concern that erbil could indeed be threatened. now, on the humanitarian side, there are small groups on sinjar mountain continuing to come down. we spoke with one who said he walked down with dozens of other people with seven hours helped by syrian kurdish rebels who have come across through syria and are leading some of them down the side of the mountain. >> tensions are running high in st. louis, missouri, after a police officer shot and killed an unarmed black teenager yesterday. dozens of people rallied outside the police department this morning chanting: i'm bloack ad i am proud. no justice. no peace. the st. louis county police chief provided details about the incidents. >> it was a physical altercation between the subject and the police officer at the time that extended eventually out into the street. and that is,

. >> jane araf joins us live from erbil. what is the u.s. saying about those airstrikes r jane? >> reporter: the u.s. has launched 14 airstrikes and it appears to have widened it's mish somewhat. it's now referring to protecting critical infrastructure which clearly the mosul dam falls under as well as furthering humanitarian goals and protecting u.s. interests. now, in addition to the fighting that zeina referred to near the mosul dam, we spoke to peshmerga officials and they say there is fierce fighting to the east of the dam. we are told the u.s. is launching airstrikes near there to try to drive out islamic state group fighters. peshmerga are waiting to go in there to try to retake that town. >> what has been the humanitarian fallout in terms of displacement and strain on hospitals and so on? >> reporter: absolutely. it's a huge strain on a region that was already struggling with a wave of syrian refugees and arab refugees from other parts of iraq. on top of that now, it has close to a million displaced iraqis coming from the north. and you can see the strain in the people a

jane araf reports from the country's north. >> reporter: this floating bridge from syria is now life line for iraqi yazidis. the route off sinjar mountain from syria back into iraq. thousands have come off the area, the yazidis live in the region but with their towns taken over here they rely on the kindness of strangers. they have been stranded on the mountain for days and walked for hours. these are the survivors but a lot of them are wondering what will survive of their community. this camp was built for syrian refugees now full of yazidis who tried and failed to defend their towns. >> translator: seven of my relatives were killed by shelling. some were beheaded. >> reporter: he says they need help to go back and bury the bodies. she shows me the body of her decadecapitated brother moussah. >> my brother was beheaded and they put it on the internet for everyone to see. >> reporter: the yazidis say they have suffered over 17 massacres over the centuries. after this last one, the only solution is for them all to leave. their anger extends to their own leaders. this man asks why they

. >>> now to jane araf who is at the bag it campbella example near the iraq-syria border. there are so many people arriving at the camps. what stories are you hearing from them? >> horrific stories. these people here are essentially survivors, but as you can see from the signs and their faces they don't feel safe yet. the stories they are telling us are of relatives who died on the mountain, sinjar mountain, where they escaped the onslaught of the islamic state fighters. some of the women tell tales of having their sisters, mothers taken away. they are members of the yazidi minority. the islamic state declared that they want to exterminate them. following the women into slavery, and doing terrible things to them. eastern here has we'll tifs who died. they managed to walk down the mountain. they are demanding to be tape out of iraq. they have to prospect of being saved anywhere. >> what is the situation in the camps. people arriving hungry, tired. are re able to get enough food, medical attention and shelter. there's not enough of anything. essentially what they have is she

jane araf joins us from erbil. i'm intrigued to know the impact of the fighting on the humanitarian situation, the fact that the u.s. changed its find about the rescue plan. >> well it's changed its mind because it was unclear how many yazidi were trapped on the remote mountain range, 40km across, and people were in pockets. it seems after sending special forces and marines into there to make assessment, that there are fewer than thought. kurdish officials tell us that that is because a lot of them have been able to come down the side of the mountain into syria, lead by kurd-syrian rebels. sorry about the noise. you can hear there's a lot of aircraft in the air. the yazidis are coming down from the mountain into syria and back to northern iraq. 300,000 have crossed over, according to officials. it's an indication as to why there are more in iraq, northern iraq in relative safety than still on the mountain. >> it seems that the human darian situation will -- humanitarian situation will not be relieved soon. talk us

jane araf, al jazeera, erbil later in the show, the islamic state is chasing jaziti. s. we take a closer look at who these people are. meanwhile, a new round of airstrikes and rocket fire overnight in gaza. you are looking live right now inside gaza. the aftermath of one of those strikes. you are looking at a bombed out bus. the renewed violence comes after the end of a 72-hour truce where israel renewed strikes in response to rocket fire by hamas. theisitsi military said it hit more than 30 targets inside of gaza. this in response to those 70 rockets that were fired at them. a palestinian health official says a senior member of hamas was killed in one of those airstrikes at a mosque. his was one of three bodies found underneath the ruins. so far, more than 1900 palestinians have been killed and 67 have died in israel. palestinian negotiators remain in egypt in hopes of salveaging talks aimed at ending the violence. the scene in jerusalem is quite different. the streets appeared almost normal on friday, but that normalcy is did he haeceiving. jane ferguson tells us why.
