i'm carol costello. thank you so much for joining me. what a difference a day makes. we start this hour in ferguson, missouri, where sources tell us that after days of withholding information, the ferguson police department will publicly name the officer who shot unarmed teenager michael brown. as you can see they're setting up for a press conference right now. when the police chief takes to the mike we'll have that announcement as soon as it happens but here's what we do know about that officer right now. he is a six-year veteran of the ferguson police department. he has no history of disciplinary action and he is from the st. louis area. in the meantime, this was the scene in ferguson last night, thousands gathered in the streets spreading their message peacefully with very little signs of police presence. the difference is this man, missouri state highway patrol captain ron johnson. >> thank you! >> johnson a native son to ferguson, took to the streets alongside demonstrators just a few hours after he was put in charge yesterday, when

i'm carol costello. this morning, the white house takes a major step to put isis in the cross hairs and possibly nudges the united states closer to new military action against the terrorists. u.s. officials tell cnn that at any time recog any -- flights could fly over syria. this morning, there are new questions about that tape, including the possibility of a second terrorist depicted in the video. we'll talk about that in a few minutes, but first the recon flights and the possibility of american air flights over syria. barbara starr is at the pentagon to tell us more. >> u.s. officials have indeed those surveillance flights have been authorized by the president. question is what will trigger the next step. when will air strikes happen? >> u.s. recon flights could begin over syria at any time according to u.s. officials using possibly drones, spy planes or f 18s, the pentagon is drafting options to strike inside syria. but the u.s. won't warn the syrian government who says carrying out air strikes withou

i'm carol costello. thanks so much for joining me. we do begin with breaking news this hour. in afghanistan, a terrible tragedy has gone down. terrorist dressed up in afghan military uniforms opened fire on american troops, 15 wounded, one dead. jim has been following the story. >> reporter: just more the conditions of the attack, the circumstance of this attack. this is a major training base for afghan officers of the afghan national security forces, camp gargha, this is a training afghan forces so they can take over responsibility that's been born by u.s. and coalition forces. you have an attacker who turned his gun on american forces out there. carried out this attack. it's unclear whether it was a member of the afghan security force or it was a terrorist or a member of the taliban dressed up in the uniform. both of those have occurred before. i'm told by the pentagon, one american soldier killed. 15 wounded. they are still assessing the conditions of those wounded. we're going to keep you up to date

i'm carol costello. thank you so much for joining me. we begin with horrific developments out of the middle east. islamic terrorists have executed a u.s. journalist and warned that another may soon die. the terror group isis released a chilling video that appears to show the beheading of kidnapped american journal james foley. the video is so gruesome we can only show you these still images. isis claims the execution is payback for u.s. air strikes in iraq. also in the video, isis militants threaten to kill captured american journal stephen sotloff if those air strikes don't stop. in the meantime, the white house is working to confirm the authenticity of this video. earlier today, there was a response to the killing. >> what they are trying to do is here is intimidate the united states of backing off the attacks that we've done the last several weeks, and i think our response should be and our response will be to not do that. in fact, we should pick up the pace here. the definition of terrorism is political violence, a violence for polit

i'm carol costello. thank you for joining me. we begin in the st. louis suburb of ferguson. police are calling for calm this morning after a night of looting and fires. this is what the city looked like last night. >> just at the sporting goods store and then looked behind me and the shopping center, at least three more stores being looted at this point. we're seeing a lot of windows being smashed, people running out with clothing. >> everything on me. >> here is another look at the unrest last night. flames shooting from a quick trip gas station that was looted. this all started when protesters took to the streets over the shooting of an unarmed teenager saturday night by police. witnesses say it was unprovoked. but ferguson's police chief says the teenager got into a physical confrontation with an officer and tried to take his gun. that african-american teenager, 18-year-old michael brown, was supposed to start his freshman year of college today. but now his parents preparing to plan his funeral. brown's high schoolteachers cal

i'm carol costello. thank you so much for joining me. we begin in iraq and the news this morning that the united states is considering air evacuations for the thousands of refugees stranded by isis militants, raising again that question if americans will soon have boots on the ground in iraq. right now some 130 additional advisers are in the country and may help in those evacuations. it comes as nuri al-maliki vows to stay in power, leveling start criticism of those who want him to step aside. >> we're holding on to our stance. it is very dangerous. >>> in the meantime, the united states has completed six air drops to yazidis threatened by isis militants. nearly 100,000 meals and more than 27,000 gallons of water have been delivered and the border between iraq and syria has become a refuge of sorts for those refugees, some of those walking 15 hours in a desperate bid for safety. cnn is there. tell us what's going on on the ground. >> reporter: well, carol, that wave of humanity we saw coming out of syria yesterday in ivan watson's report

i'm carol costello. thank you so much for joining me. we start this hour in iraq and maybe a glimmer of good news. a possibles u.s. evacuation of thousands of refugees stranded by isis militants may not be necessary after all. that's because the pentagon says the air strikes have worked and the terror siege on mount sinjar is over. on top of that, an assessment by u.s. troops found far fewer yazidis stranded on mount sinjar than previously thought. still, the humanitarian crisis is far from over. the united nations estimates more than 400,000 people have been driven from their homes since june. the u.n. is declaring its highest level of emergency in northern iraq on par with syria and sudan. we're also getting word that last night's air drop of food and water on the mountaintop could likely be the last one dropped by the united states. cnn pentagon correspondent barbara starr shows us how much has changed in the last 24 hours. >> reporter: carol, as a pentagon official said to me a short time ago, if you

"newsroom" starts now. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com >>> good morning, everyone. i'm carol costello. thank you for joining me. we start this hour with breaking news out of iraq. the air strikes president obama authorized just hours ago have now begun. let's begin with white house correspondent jim acosta. jim, what can you tell us? >> well, carol, what we can tell you is that in just the last several minutes the pentagon press secretary, rear admiral kirby announced on twitter basically announcing on behalf of the u.s. government that the air strikes have begun in iraq, rear admiral john kirby saying on twitter "u.s. military aircraft conduct air strike on isis, artillery was used against kurdish forces defending irbil near u.s. personnel." the last part is critical as we've been hearing from white house officials and the president said last night, when he sent those u.s. military advisers in to iraq back in june, he made it very clear at the time and officials have made it cl
