kristin joins us to tell us what the united nations is doing about the rising violence in libya, kristineporter: as a sign of the international community's growing concern about the situation in libya, the security council has just passed a resolution expanding the sanctions regime in that country to allow them to sanction individual militia leaders, perhaps like those responsible for the takeover of tripoli's airport in the last week. this resolution requires countries who want to sell arms to the libyans to get approval there the commission first not only arms, but parts for equipment and so on. the security council has been hearing from the special representative for the u.n. in libya, and he is painting a very grim picture there, saying that the violence is escalating, and the u.n. hasn't been able to not only get a ceasefire, but also to bring the parties together to the table to discuss a possible political way forward for the country. he is very concerned about the situation. and we also heard from libya's ambassador to the u.n., and he said for the first time he is worried that t

kristin saloomey is at united nations for us. what does this resolution do? >> reporter: well, marian, the aim is to cut off support for not only islamic state but also for al nusra group. in iraq and syria. while it doesn't and to that end it names six new individuals, puts them on a sanctions list. it also reminds member states that they're not supposed to buy oil from these groups or pay ransoms to these groups. and it puts a real focus on the issue of foreign fighters. it calls on member states to do what they can to engage with at-risk populations. it reminds them to watch what they're doing on the internet which is a big tool for these groups to recruit people from overseas to come and join their cause and it also expresses a willingness on the part of the security council to levy sanctions on these groups that are support the rebel groups. their level of concern about some of these fighters coming back home and causing trouble there. >> kristin, the u.n. already have the islamic state and the nusra front on their list, what could this be to target the

. >> kristin welker is at the white house. the president had a lot to say on the wide-ranging issue. what happens next there? >> well, first to what happened late last night, house republicans did pass a piece of legislation, alex. but it has absolutely no chance of passing through the senate. it's just not going to get enough support. the white house called it a show vote, said it wasn't serious. it was just pure politics. on friday, president obama signaled he is prepared to act alone. he had asked for $3.7 billion to deal with the crisis at the border. the senate was considering a piece of legislation that would have given him about half of that, legislation that the house passed was only for $659 million, alex. so not nearly what the president was asking for. he signaled he is ready to act alone in that regard. not clear how much he will divert without congressional help. based on my conversations at the white house, he is preparing to announce some type of executive action to deal with the issue. advocates urging him to g

kristin welker from martha's vineyard, i have to get to you. is the white house upset about the right -- i guess the ideological right's criticism of the president in the golf cart the other day? chuckling with alonzo mourning and the other fellow? >> well, of course they're pushing back against that pretty hard, chris. as you know, they always make this argument that the office of the presidency travels wi s wis obama wherever he goes. they also point out that this trip has been incredibly jam packed from a work perspective. we've seen the president address the nation three separate times while traveling here on martha's vineyard. having said that, the optics certainly open the president up to criticism because he made that very somber statement about james foley's execution and then went directly to the golf course so the white house not surprised by the criticism certainly. but they're pushing back against it pretty hard. >> usually in new york, ladies, you can read the politics of a situation by comparing the tabs. the daily news tends to b

kristin, good to have you back on the program. give us the latest on this kirby presser. >> ronin, thank you for having me back. when asked whether the administration was seriously considering air strikes in syria, rear admiral kirby said this. "we continue to assess and monitor isil activities, that's why we put assessment team there is to get a good situational awareness." that's the official line from the administration right now, ronna ronan. but i can tell you, based on my conversations president obama is weighing a range of options. he's not putting anything off of the table with the exception of putting boots on the ground, although my sources also tell me that it is not imminent. there's no immediate plans to go into syria. but it's certainly among the options that this administration is considering. and, of course, in the wake of the james foley execution there is mounting pressure on the president to do something. i ice has a very sophisticated pr machine. they have been releasing videos, tweets, taunting the president,
