mrs. mcdonnell's attorneys who wanted to know what he told investigators in several meetings including one last sunday, but williams responded over and over, "i can't recall." mr. williams said he gave the mcdonnells all those gifts because he wanted the governor's help in promoting his product. mrs. mcdonnell's attorneys say williams used and manipulated her with an inappropriate close relationship. they pointed to 1,200 texts and phone calls between the two. mr. williams says about 100% of those discussions were about his business. bob mcdonnell's defense team is trying to show he never knew about the $20,000 shopping spree or even some of the loans and that it wasn't him but his wife doing the asking. >> i think it was a good day and we look forward to the truth continuing to come out and i look forward to next week. we have a long way to go in the trial and i have confidence in my legal team. they've done a great job. i look forward to having the truth continue to come out and prevailing. >> reporter: are you going to spend time with your family this weekend, governor? >> i'm going to

mr. mcdonnell arrived around 9:20 this morning, his wife after him. the 2 arrived separately with their separate legal teams. the former governor commented briefly heading into court about how he feels. service, i of public never thought i would testify in a trial like this. >> now to this morning's testimony. he says they were married for 38 years, and much of that time he was in public service. he says that early on the couple started to lead separate lives. she was taking care of the children and a business. he says he put his heart and soul into the attorney general's office, and that may have been at the cost of his marriage. he says he knew his wife was feeling stressful and anxious about her increased role in public life and suggested to her that she go to counseling, an idea that she was not receptive to. he says for 10 to 15 years she fought with stress and had a more public role in his career. they talked about an event in 2010 where maureen mcdonnell's father died. the former governor said she was inconsolable. she then got a $25,000 check
