ms. edwards, is recognized for her questions. >> thank you, mr. chairman. i feel like i should have been here earlier, so i apologize. i've enjoyed the discussion thus far and reading the testimony. you know, my favorite movie is "contact," all right? every year it comes out since 1997, i watch it, i dream, i think, well, you know, who knows? what's intriguing about this conversation is the idea that -- and it is a little bit of hubris, right? -- that somehow we're waiting to find them as opposed to them finding us. and maybe that's just the nature of home homo sapiens, that's kif what we do. but i'm a little bit curious, dr. werthimer, in your prepared statement, you discuss the seti project which will use six telescopes to search nearby stars and stars most likely to host a planet system similar to the sun's. and so the project as you describe it would examine a large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum spanning from low frequencies through optical light to detect possible signals from advanced civilization. how are the target stars that you talked ab

ms. edwards: thank you, mr. speaker. it's a sad day for the united states when republicans in this congress see a problem and then choose not to work with democrats to solve the problem. and that's exactly what's happened here today. their draconian way or the highway. let's be clear about what the problem is. unaccompanied minor children, frightened, some fleeing violence, needing protection, and deserving due process. the solution to this problem is as much about who these children are as it is about who we are. as a mother and a legislator, i know we should be compelled to act as a matter of humanity, but also as a matter of law. we know we have problems on the border that are in need of solutions. republicans have rejected one solution, comprehensive immigration reform, to address the problem. they have rejected another solution, the request of the president for a supplemental appropriation that includes resources for judges, representation, and services for minor children, and assistance to the countries of origin.

ms. edwards for five minutes. >> i appreciate your allow me to come sit in on this committee. come to this from a couple of different places. when you visited my son's school when he was in eighth grade i know for he and all of the students it was inspiring and not that they were necessarily going in to studying those fields, but it gave them a different avenue and approach to the work they're going. and i was a student -- when i was a student had a great aptitude for science and math. i would not fill the stairs from going into those fields i was not actively encouraged. it was not until after high school, after college, in a different direction that i happened upon a lockheed engineering, got the job, and it out doing analysis and writing and software testing and development that i discovered that in fact i did have a very practical aptitude. and so it worries me that sometimes -- we are not in a situation now where we necessarily discourage students, but we have to have more encouragement for students who may not think of that as their first choice because they may not have
