now we're involved in a political effort here, nuri al maliki and his successor. how do you deal with the open -- is there an open-ended committee? the senate says there shouldn't be. >> well, there's actually three things at play here. on the political side, we've been having conversations for many weeks about iraq's political transition and the fact that fighting, going forward, is to put a new government in place that can bring iraqis together to do that. when you heard the president announce this new military action, the humanitarian piece, air drops that you showed. brits are now joining us. the second part of it was taking strikes to protect erbil, which we've seen. and in the past 24 hours, taking military strikes around the sinjar mountain area to protect the tens of thousands of people trapped on that mountain. we're giving them food and water that they need and taking active military steps to protect them. these are limited objectives here. the president said there's not a specific end date. i think it would be silly to put one down on paper on such a fl

to step down what will happen if no al maliki takes your advice and throws in the towel what will happen to iraq well first of all nuri al maliki just came out way ahead in the lection and was certainly on his way to forming a coalition it's not for me to remove him or keep him it's up to the iraqi people and up to the iraqi political forces i think to some extent he's overwhelmed by this crisis. he is certainly not proving himself to be someone who is a good reconciler he's certainly not anyone who would be confused with nelson mandela and so i think he does have some problems but putting that aside what we have today is a very serious threat to iraq's territorial integrity indeed to its to its sovereignty and my view from here in the united states is the united states needs to be heavily involved diplomatically and perhaps as well helping the iraqi forces because these i.c.'s people you know they are not interested in just iraq they are interested in the rest of us as well and so i think we as a civil. as ation if you will need to be prepared to deal with organizations such as i.c.'s it's an interesting idea i wonde

he has to undo a lot of the damage that his predecessor nuri maliki created. maliki basically ostracized the suni arabs of iraq, discriminated against them, prevented them in playing a role in iraq's government. he turned the iraqi army into his own personal militia. basically, a lot of people were disenfranchised. now, in order to win them over again it's going to become a very complicated process, because many of them have fed into the isis narrative. this is a conflict and a battle that is going to take years even a decade now to try and fix, because isis have got a foothold. this is not a small group operating in mountains and caves like al qaeda. they're in possession of major towns and cities, and that is why the u.s. needs to continue to play a major role in assists countries working with the kurdish peshmerga, hedging reconstitute the iraqi army, because of the fact that boots on the ground is the only way isis can be effectively dismantled. air strikes may confine them to an extent but won't eliminate them. >> interesting to see in the days ahead what

i'm talking about prime minister nuri al maliki. today, a new prime minister has been named.but doesn't this just bolster the administration's case that they didn't want to be connected to a guy who was, for lack of a better word, a shady operator there? there's been a new prime minister appointed. he's hinted strongly over the last several hours that he doesn't plan to go. >> completely walking away is not the answer to being concerned with who the leader is. if there was an issue the administration had as it was developing, they should have been developing at the table. the president has been off on a number of conflicts with no post strategy. no plan, no policy. whether it's libya, where he actively worked to remove moammar gadhafi and has no post-gadhafi plan. egypt, where, again, he worked there to actively look to mubarak being moved and no post-mubarak plan. and then syria with his issues of, you know, calling for assad to be removed but then no plan. and then iraq, same thing, military action, where he removed u.s. troops but did not continue u.s. influence while isis
