wolf? >> athena, stand by.want to go to the state department, elise labott is standing by over there. what else are you learning, elise? because this is potentially a real calamity. if those 40,000 yazidis stranded on that mountain are slaughtered or die from starvation, the world will be watching right now. not only them, but tens of thousands of iraqi christians, many of them have already fled because of the persecution, but now they are endangered. iraqi shiites are endangered. the central government of nuri al maliki, that military doing virtually nothing to protect these people in iraq. what are you hearing at the state department? >> reporter: well, wolf, obviously, this is something that they need to deal with right away. when you heard josh earnest say iraq has a lot of problems, this one is particularly acute. the administration has been very reluctant to get involvedle in the iraqi government sorted out its political chaos. as you know, the iraqis still have to have a prime minister. they still have t

>> that's right, wolf. we're expecting the president to make a statement on the situation in iraq as the any moment. one thing that is holding things up we should report are some of the technical difficulties the president did not elect to come to the location where we're at where the white house press corps is assembled to follow his developments here in martha's vineyard. instead a signal is being set up at his home where he's staying with a family here and so we're waiting on that to be put together in order to see the president. we may only hear him, want to pass all of that along in case we get an audio only from the president. we expect the president to talk about some of the kinetic movements under way in northern iraq over the last self days. those air strikes that have been going after isis targets in in north iraq. and in addition to that, these humanitarian air drops being aimed at those refugees trying to hide from isis militants in the sinjar mountains. we do think the president will talk about

i'm wolf blitzer reporting from washington.wo separate investigations under way in the shooting death of michael brown. one is a 12-member grand jury. the other is a federal civil rights probe, focused on whether the killing involved racial hostilit hostility. evan perez joins us. what's the status of the civil rights probe? how is it different from what the grand jury is doing? i think we've just lost our connection. we're going to try to reconnect with him and get an update. evan, are you there? give us an update on the federal. what do we know? >> well, wolf, we know it's still at the very, very beginning of this. we're talking about a long process. the fbi, as you said, has done about 200 interviews with people here in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. also, they're going to not only look at those interviews, they're going to look at some of the practices of the police department to discern whether this officer or the police department has a bigger problem. officials are very much expecting that the justice depa

i'm wolf blitzer in washington. we're going oh to get back to don lemon momentarily on the streets of ferguson, missouri, getting reaction to the major developments that have occurred in the past few hours, including the police releasing information about what they call a strong-arm robbery at a convenience store, the allegation they make that michael brown, the 18-year-old was shot and killed by a police officer in ferguson was involved in that alleged strong-arm robbery. we just got a statement in from michael brown's family and attorneys. let me read some of it to our viewers. michael brown's family is beyond outraged that the devious way the police chief has chosen to disseminate piecemeal information in a manner intended to assassinate the character of their son, following such a brutal assassination of his person in broad daylight. the statement adds, there is nothing based on the facts that have been placed before us that can justify the execution-style murder of their child by this police officer, as he held
