nbc's craig melvin reports. >> reporter: overnight, police released new surveillance video showing this man following 18-year-old hannah graham in a downtown pedestrian mall at 1:06 a.m. saturday. two minutes later, graham is seen walking with the same man following her. shortly after released, the man in the video showed up at the police department and admitted following hannah because she appeared distressed, visibly intoxicated, adding he wanted to make sure she was okay. the man said he never talked to hannah and stopped following her after he saw another man approach and put his arm around her. he told police it seemed the man either knew hannah or was trying to help. police are now looking for that man. meanwhile, other surveillance videos released show images of hannah graham earlier that evening outside a nearby irish pub where she's seen walking by herself but never going inside the bar. ten minutes later, the second-year uva student can be seen running, then walking in front of this charlottesville gas station. police say no one seems to be chasing her. a frustrated police chi

we want to check in with nbc's craig melvin, who is following another protest that's under way in new york city right now. what are you seeing there? >> hey, pete. it's not under way just yet. we're expecting this particular protest to start at 11:45. the protest that you mentioned was in times square in front of the mcdonald's. we are expecting that same crowd to make their way to this particular protest at 11:45 outside mcdonald's. these protesters fighting for 15. that's their rallying cry. fight for 15. they want a $15 minimum wage. they also want to be able to unionize as well. the two main things that they are fighting for. i spoke with one of the protesters this morning shortly after it all wrapped up. take a listen. >> i really do think that it show assign of bravery and that we're not doing anything to basically hinder anybody. we're just trying to show that we're trying to stand together united far good cause. >> people are getting arrested behind you. >> yes, i understand you. that's a show of bravery, that regardless of the fact that they are willing to do whatever it take

. >> our own craig melvin has been following this story live now from the streets outside of our studiose in new york. craig, we're hearing that there are more arrests that have just happened, maybe moments ago. what's the latest? >> reporter: yeah. in fact, we saw them. i'd say maybe about an hour ago, less than an hour. i think we have video of those arrests. there were two protests here in new york city at two different mcdonald's. the first one at times square. this one here on the corner of 56th and 8th. this morning, 19 arrests. 15 guys, four women arrested largely for not getting out of the street, refusal to disperse. i can tell you that i saw at least 20 people get arrested this afternoon but part of this is the new strategy. i talked to organizers this morning in an attempt to raise awareness, they have decided to employ civil disobedience. that's one of the reasons we've seen so many arrests here in detroit reportedly, some 42 arrests. in chicago, reportedly more than two dozen arrests there. the idea today using this civil disobedience to raise awareness and it appears at thi

msnbc's craig melvin joins me. at least 19 workers were arrested this morning.ain demand is for the minimum wage but also the right to unionize. how is this -- do they think, going to help the cause? >> well, you know, these protests, these fight for 15 protests have been going on since late 2012 and today organizers say they are starting a new chapter. and that chapter is civil disobedience. they've decided one of the best ways to raise awareness about the low wages for fast food workers in this country, one of the best ways to do that is to have folks get arrested. this morning, there were 19 arrests, as you indicated. 15 men, four women got arrested outside a mcdonald's in times square. right now at the corner of eighth and 56th. and i can tell you, i just saw probably about two dozen additional arrests as well. i want to show you the scene behind me. you can probably see police -- a number of policemen wrapping things up. that protest just wrapped up about ten minutes ago. it may have gone 15, 20 minutes, max. but i talked to a member of the protesters this

nbc's craig melvin joins me from charlottesville, virginia.t's the next step for police in the investigation? >> jose, good morning. as we're told right now, the next step is essentially twofold. they're continuing to search for hannah graham. she's been missing for 12 days now. while they conduct that search in charlottesville, they're also looking for jesse matthew. the 32-year-old hospital room technician who has now been charged with abduction and intent to defile. here in virginia, intent to defile is essentially the same as being charged with attempt to commit some sort of sexual assault. i can tell you, though, there is a published report, a published news report in "the washington post" that matthew has retained an attorney. we're working to confirm that report now. there are folks on the ground here in charlottesville who are wondering if, in fact, the accused man has obtained an attorney, does that mean that he is right now preparing to turn himself in. police yesterday told me he's got a number of friends and associates in neighbori

craig melvin is live in charlottesville with more. craig, good morning? >> reporter: eun, good morning to you. i spoke with the captain last night in charlottesville. he tells me they plan to release surveillance video today. and this is some surveillance video outside the irish pub where hannah graham was last seen. it doesn't show her going inside the pub. but i'm told it shows her outside the pub. at one point she talks to someone, moves in and out of the frame a few times. and that's it. these are thought to be the images of hannah graham. there was a helicopter search last night of the area. bloodhounds were out last night as well. yesterday afternoon, searching for any clues, any evidence of the second-year student here at the university of virginia. her parents, as you know, released that statement yesterday saying they were heartbroken but also heartened by the outpouring of support so far. we're also expecting a news conference this afternoon here in charlottesville as well. we're expecting to learn more about the investigation and possibly a lit

national correspondent craig melvin is down in charlottesville with the latest. , craig. >> matt, good morning. the police captain here with the charlottesville police department told me last night they are going to be releasing more surveillance tape later today. that tape shows second-year student hannah graham outside a local bar the night she disappeared. again, at this point, police insist there's no reason to suspect foul play but they also admit they have no idea where she is. these are the images investigators have released of hannah graham, 9:30, friday night, preparing to go out. at 12:46 am, a security camera outside this irish pub captured the 18-year-old honor student, who police say appeared intoxicated. >> last time we knew she had been seen prior to this video, she was with a young man who she had classes with. they had just met on the street, went into a party. she left there at 12:15. he did not leave the party. >> at 1:00 am, graham texted friends she was lost. 30 minutes later her phone went silent. when friends hadn't heard from her by sunday

national correspondent craig melvin has been following this story all week. what can you tell us?it was a week ago tonight that 18-year-old hannah graham was last seen near the university of virginia. police have now identified a person of interest they're looking for as graham's fellow students still look to bring her back safely. on thursday night, when many college students normally start going out, they instead lit candles to bring back hannah, not seen since she went out last friday night. >> it's really amazing to see how tight the uva community is. >> it's about supporting each other and friends and family of hannah's. >> reporter: the student was last seen saturday at 1:08 am in this grainy surveillance video shot through the doors of this jewelry store. two minutes earlier, another security camera captured graham and then an older, white man following her, who police now call a cooperative witness. he came forward and told police he was following graham because, he said, she looked distressed. >> as he was following her, he said a black male came up behind her, put his ar
