the monsoon season started in sri lanka earlier this month. weather authorities say the rain around badula had been heavy over the past four days. the governor urges residents on hillsides to move because of concerns of mudslides, but most of them have remained, citing lack of funds. mai shoji joins us with more on the situation. >> catherine, i'm afraid i can't give you great news. the rain will be continuously plaguing sri lanka, the second round of the monsoonal season, this is a week before but really it doesn't look that staggering but the areas are receiving an amount about 120 millimeters have been falling across some locations in sri lanka. this is the area near the devastated locations. unfortunately, rain will be continuing at least into saturday, and it could be some sudden burst of showers on and off showers with thunderstorms also going to be of potential. so into the next couple of days, or even few more days ahead, we're looking at more additional rainfall of about 120 millimeters in and around the area so the situation i'm afra

and this is quite a scene coming out of the sri lanka area. let's put it in perspective.umbo, the capital of sri lanka is 230 kilometers west of this district where the area of the mudslide happened. look at the mountainous terrain and twine the rain and mountains and gravity working in this area and the result is the mudslide. some visuals coming out of that region and we did have some pretty impressive stuff out of that area with, again, ten meters of mud and rock and debris just basically obliterating anything in its path and there are still mudslide warnings for the area thanks to all the monsoonal rain still in the forecast. come back to the graphics. on our latest imagery, we have wave after wave of rainfall, thunderstorms and this is all monsoonal rain near the badula district and when it took place we had over 100 millimeters in about a 48-hour period. again, so that is going to lead to the possibility of more flooding and more mudslides. this is all thanks to the monsoon currently withdrawing from india and sri lanka but it is still far enough west where it has a

rescue workers are still looking for missing people in sri lanka after a landslide. the weather has not been cooperating. mai shoji joins us with the details. >> the weather will not be cooperating for some time. unfortunately, the rain will be continuing to hamper and hen der the recovery process across skri land ca. this is how much rainfall has fallen across the region for the past48 hours. 80 millimeters already. and the search for survivors continues. disaster management officials stated over 100 are still missing, and the hopes of finding any survivors continue to dwindle. over 150 homes were buried in the mud. heavy rainfall continues to hamper search operations, making the already slick soil slicker for the heavy equipment. the soil is so loose. so the, on top of the saturated ground, we're likely to see 150 millimeters of additional rainfall into the next few days. it could happen in one day with about 100 to 120 millimeters of rain. it is their secondary rainy season that the residents are experiencing in and around sri lanka. and it's going to be an on and

the weather and a deadly mud shrine in sri lanka is the result of weeks of monsoonal rain.gist derek vandam has an update. this is just a devastating story. >> it really is. in fact, it's rained 15 out of the past 16 days in this part of the world. you add the combination of high elevation, very mountainous terrain, and we have loose gravel and rock across this area, and we factor in gravity and this is the result. we have had a deadly landslide. 10 confirmed casualties at the moment with 192 reported missing with up to so meters deep of this mudslide debris, just blanketing and basically wiping out anything in its path. quite astounding pictures coming out of that area. let's put it in perspective. columbo about 230 kilometers to the west of where the landslide took place 7:30 wednesday morning local time. 140 homes destroyed. let's look at some of the visuals coming out of the badula district. mudslides burying stores of workers in a tea plantation. 48,000 people in badula. this is triggered by the monsoon rains. 100 to 150 millimeters of rainfall since monday. mudslides

and looking at the forecast it's south of india and s sri lanka and temperatures not high and indiaegrees the high in new deli and weather sweeping through on the other side of the arabian sea and you see this area of cloud pushing through with heavy rain here. you can see it there. on the southern side of the caspean sea we had large rainfall totals over the last 24 hours. now, that system is going to continue to push away to the east and so much there as it gets up to kazistan and pakistan and see heavy rainfall there as you can see. meanwhile in the arabian peninsula we have a wind coming and actually starting to see a hint of winter. nothing too dramatic and looking at temperatures well currently about 36 degrees here in doha. we have seen lifted dust in kuwait city and that increase with the shamal wind will bring cool air down from the northeast and wednesday is the coolest we have seen of the autumn period and the rest of the gulf states the temperatures will drop over the next couple days and chilly 33. >> reporter: thanks indeed and a midway point on the news hour and still

heavy rains have disrupted the search for scores of people feared buried in a landslide in central sri lankas thought 100 people are still missing, and hopes of finding them alive are fading. >> this is a classroom and one of the schools that has been converted into a temporary shelter for the people affected by the landslide. there are people here who have lost their loved ones, even their homes. all around me you see stacks of pillows, mattresses, anything people can pull out of their homes before they were buried under the mud. i met a little boy and girl who lost both their parents in this disaster. that his mother sent her children away to safety and said they would collect their belongings and joined them, but before they could do that the mud was too quick. a woman told me how she grabbed her two children and ran to safety when she heard people screaming outside. rescue operations have been very slow, because it has been raining incessantly over the past two days. the army said conditions are too dangerous to continue operations. yesterday, no survivors or dead bodies were found. at t

[ inaudible ] many went back to homes to salvage belongings. there are many children who are orphaned. >> as the military is assisting with the operation? my understanding is that the military is assisting with the relief operation? >> yes. yes. right now we deployed the army at the scene. air force deployed two helicopters to recover as much people as possible. bad conditions are also affecting rescue operations right now. and in myanmar, sri lanka, it is different from africa. >> i actually believe that africa is at the stage that asia was 15-odd years ago. where a number of companies, many of whom in this room, viewed asia as an opportunity to plant and grow aggressively. those of white house two local and plant ourselves properly for the right investment, right locally and we can then lock in africa. the risk attributes of african countries, i talk about a great deal, with you if i go there and travel, you can find ways to control the way that is perfectly acceptable to the government's needs of most of our country. so to give you an example, gold and master card, we go to a bank in africa be we take our two partners here, you take from them a certain level of guarantee, which takes two to three days between the time that we take the money back. in small bachgs banks, and underwriting, and we try to find a way that they could do the underwriting and provide a level which we accept as collateral. it is a way of managing the same risk. it is true of what you can do with all kinds of risk in this case. i th
