after that colorado legislation, the gun safety legislation passed in the wake of newtown and the aurora movie theater massacre in colorado, the gun lobby mounted a recall campaign against two state senators who voted for that legislation. these recalls were low turnout elections held in isolation two months before any other election day, a very tiny proportion of voters turned the out. it was absolutely a single issue election, but the voters who didn't turn out voted strongly to throw out these state senators, to throw them out because of their gun votes, to throw them out on behalf of the gun lobby. the gun lobby in colorado then distributed these images of tombstones with the names of those senators on them that they'd run recalls against because they killed them. they killed those senators. and then they put up the third gravestone saying who's next, along with an ar-15 on the bottom there. who are the guys that the ar-15 is going to murder next? that was nice. in colorado. but those recall elections happened last year in september. this year on election night in colorado even as, y

dupont shot and killed dave shultz on his fox catcher estate in newtown square. shultz and his brother mark lived on the estate along with others training for the olympics. it's a film director bennett miller was trying to make for 8 years. >> it was something i wanted to do, these characters were so bizarre. >> reporter: his lawyer said he often spoke to him three times a day. >> i said is john okay? >> she said no, they are saying that he shot dave. i said what? >> reporter: a two day stand off followed with dupont bar indicated inside, police tackled when he emerged to check on a furnace to shut off. many witnessed his bizarre behavior in the years leading up to the murder. they tried to get him help, but he disappeared every time they set up an appointment. he said they never thought it would end with murder. >> i'm not sure that i or anyone else would put pieces together and say this is a program for a killing. nobody saw that. >> reporter: dupont was eventually found guilty, but mentally i will and sentenced 13 to 30 years in prison. he died in 2010. dupont

after newtown. newtown was about december 10. the president was reelected there, a month later, there was a horrible slaughter, and the president stepped up and put forward a gun control bill, modest, smaller tlan what clinton passed in the 1990s, essentially just background checks as it was widdled down. that got 92% popular support. 92%. senator mcconnell and senate republicans said, we're going to kill it, and they did. when you can take on a newly reelected president who got 53 % pushing an issue with 9 2 % support. if you take him on and beat his ass, you need never fear him again. that's what happened. the thing -- i don't know -- we sat all night at the chair at cnn, and now the message is no more gridlock, no, actually, the message of the voters was, i may not like it, but we reward gridlock. mcconnell to take on the gun bill and beat it, i don't agree, but you have to admire it, and on it went throughout the agenda for two years, and voters did not say, i hate gridlock and partisanship. they didn't. i think that's an imp
