i'm dara brown. we begin with growing outrage in the wake of the grand jury's decision not to indict a new york city police officer in the apparent choke hold death of eric garner. more than 200 arrests in new york city alone last night, protesters once again blocking major highways like this one and coming face to face with police. larger crowds than wednesday night when the grand jury decision was announced. possibly fueling the anger, reports that key evidence in the case will remain secret. that's because the district attorney in charge of the case has not asked the judge to release all the grand jury transcripts like he promised. in the nation's capital and across the country, they're not just marching in the streets, they're also dying on them. this is a scene in pittsburgh, earlier in the day. and at temple university, students showing solidarity, not only with eric garner's family, but also with the family of michael brown. nbc's sarah dallof has more. >> reporter: calls for justice and refor

i'm dara brown here in new york city. the families -- two families in mourning and now all police officers are taking extra precautions to protect their lives. this less than 48 hours since the ambush style shooting of two of their own. this morning's cover of the new york daily news, we weep as one. that was certainly the case last night. new yorkers of all backgrounds gathered at the crime scene for a vigil hours before the police chief described this chilling encounter the shooter had with two strangers moments before he carried out this attack. >> he begins the conversation with them, they start speaking, and he asked them three things. he asked them for their gang affiliation, he asked them to follow him on instagram and says watch what i'm going to do. >> nbc's stephanie gosk has more. >> reporter: investigators now believe 28-year-old suspect ismaaiyl brinsley was motivated at least in part by rage towards the police. looking closely at instagram messages they say were likely posted by brinsley in the hours before
