bob orr is in washington. bob, good morning. just two quick things. number one is when you have hostages and suspects surrounded, it is the moment of what might happen but beyond that what is the cutting edge of this story as we look at it now? >> well the first thing for french authorities, they have to contain both of these threats. they have to make sure they don't go beyond the the locations where they are. there's police cordons around both locations. you have to think for the moment this threat or these two threats are contained. then it's the matter of trying to end these stand yochs peacefully. that could be very tough. these are hard-core guys. they all have some connectivity to al qaeda types in the past. who said that the kouachi brothers, for example, have been trained to die in place if they have to but to try to live to fight another day if they can. the idea they might give up seems to be farfetched. they'd rather perhaps go out in a blaze of glory and seek that martyrdom they talked about. the other situation in paris at the supermarke

bob orr has more tonight about the suspects. bob? >> reporter: there's evidence the three dead suspect knew each other and shared common ties with known terrorists. but investigators still don't know if their attacks were a coordinated set of strikes or if the grocery store gunman amedi coulibali was lone. the brothers had strong connections to al quaida. u.s. officials say said kouachi spent time in yes, yemen in 2011 training with al quaida in the arabian peninsula and late today that group known as aqap post add video praising the attack. they said the leadership of aqap have directed the operation and chosen their target carefully. officials have not verified that in. a phone interview earlier today with the french television network, a manner reporting to be cherif kouachi made a similar claim. i cherif kouachi, the caller said was sent by al quaida in yemen. i had been there and it was sheikh anwar awlaki who financed me. may allah have mers mercy on his soul. the french prosecutor said cherif kouachi spent time there in 2011.

here's our homeland security correspondent bob orr. >> reporter: long before blaming north korea for the attack on sony pictures and its film "the interview," officials say u.s. intelligence was monitoring north korea's attempts to hack into computer systems of american companies. part of that effort, according to the "new york times," involved a secret 2010 infiltration carried out by the u.s. national scurity agency. the n.s.a. reportedly hacked into north korean computer networks and inserted malware, allowing analysts to track the north's cyber operations. over time, the u.s. was able to identify specific addresses used by hackers working for the north korean government. now those same computer i.d.s have been linked to threats sent to sony, said f.b.i. director james comey. >> we can see the i.p. addresses being used to post and send e- mails were coming from i.p.s that were exclusively used by the north koreans. >> reporter: comey revealed the evidence this month to a new york cyber conference to publicly bolster the u.s. case against north korea. the regime has denied the atta

bob orr in our washington newsroom. thank you, bob.learned the first officer not the more experienced captain, was at the controls of that air asia plane that crashed into java sea. 162 people died. here's transportation correspondent jeff pegues. >> reporter: flying in bad weather, air asia 8501 made an abnormally steep climb from 32,000 to 37,000 feet in 30 seconds. the plane went went into an aerodynamic stall. the computer technology designed to prevent that may have malfunctioned or been turned off. after that, there was a terrifying fall to the java sea. the captain of the plane had more than 20,000 hours of flying time, but the first officer who was at the controls had ation of that 2200 hours. planes have become increasingly automated with pilots simply punching naf gaiks directions into computers. chesley "sully" sullenberger is a cbs news consultant. >> the increasing use of increasingly complex automation in our cockpit has meant pilots get fewer opportunities to manually fly the airplanes. they have lost some of their manua

bob orr has the latest. >> reporter: in the final moments before air asia flight 8501 crashed into the java sea the passenger jet was in a steep and dangerous climb pushing the limits of safety. new information from the plane's flight data recorder reveals the jet was ascending at a rate of 6,000 feet a minute, three times greater than normal for the air bus a-320. the pilots were paecial trying to quickly climb above bad weather, but the data suggest its the flight crew pulled the plane's nose too high likely causing the jet to stall and pitch over in a deadly dive. flight 8501, with 162 people on board, crashed into the water. the fuselage and tail shattered on impact. after listening to the plane's cockpit voice recorder, investigators say there is no evidence of terrorism no sounds of threats gunfire or explosions. instead, investigators say the two air asia pilots seemed to be alone on the flight deck, bizly trying to handle the jet. while a mechanical failure or bad weather can't be completely ruled out yet it's clear at this point investigators are focused on the pilots, scott i
