i'm betty nguyen. late last night a federal judge in texas temporarily blocked president obama's executive order on deportation. so the fate of 5 million undocumented immigrants is once again in limbo. the new ruling comes two days before the u.s. citizenship and immigration services was supposed to start accepting applications for the deferred action program. now, with the injunction texas and 25 other states can sue the federal government to permanently stop the executive orders. in a statement, texas governor greg abbott praised the decision saying it quote, rightly stops the president's overreach in its tracks. this morning, the white house is firing back though calling the policies lawful and common sense. they say the depp of justice as previously indicated will appeal the decision. >>> now to this other blast of bitter cold. over 250,000 are without power this morning and, yes, more snow is falling. out east the carolinas will see sleet and dangerous freezing rain. the big bullseye is on places

i'm betty nguyen. here we go again. a wicked snowstorm slamming parts of the u.s. right now the northeast facing snow, sleet and freezing rain. millions bracing for a messy monday commute. in the midwest, look at this. chicago buried under snow. at midway airport, 18 1/2 inches of it. the forecast is forcing schools to cancel classes and leaving more than 8,000 without power. in toledo, a snow emergency. visibility was down to just a few feet. officials issued a travel ban for parts of ohio. in nebraska the roads, they were treacherous there. over seven inches of icy snow and wind causing these two tractor trailers right here to slam into each other. and at airports, travel is up in the air. more than 2,000 flights canceled across the country. the hardest-hit airport, o'hare international with over 1300. let's get the latest from this. meteorologist bill karins is here tracking this massive storm. >> already the biggest snowstorm in chicago. the winds have died off. we're not looking at blizzard conditions. detroit, 14 1/2 inches. that's the most snow they've had i

i'm betty nguyen. breaking news out of iraq to tell you about. we are hearing hours ago isis fighters launched a major offensive on the town of al baghdadi about eight miles from an air base. militants have taken over al baghdadedy's police station and other government buildings there. . the u.s. coalition has launched an air strike in response to this. there is no word on any cash actualities. a pentagon spokeswoman says there's been no direct attack on that nearby air base. >>> back at home parts of the country preparing for some of the coldest weather they have seen in decades. 35 million people in 17 states are under some form of windchill advisory from the upper midwest to the deep south. it is zero degrees in some places, and below zero in other with a bitter weekend ahead. by monday, parts of new england could be at 10 to 20 below with windchills as low as minus 35p. but that is not all. blizzard watches are in effect saturday night through sunday for the entire new england coast and yes, that includes boston where crews have worked nonsto

nbc's betty nguyen is here with more. >> good morning, sheinelle. deputies spotted a school bus driving erratically and they started following it warning other drivers and calling for help. a frightening bus ride for 11 students in minnesota this week. much of it caught on tape. you see the school bus weaving back and forth across the road. veering at times into the wrong lane. even driving off into a ditch. it happened wednesday about two hours north of minneapolis. deputies were trailing the bus with these images captured by the dashboard cameras. at one point, the bus nearly hit an approaching vehicle before its driver quickly backed out of the way. authorities say the driver of the bus lost control due to a medical condition. the ordeal lasted about 15 minutes with the bus coming to a stop in a ditch after deputies put spikes on the road. the kids on the bus are okay. the medical condition of the driver has not been released. sheinelle. >> betty, thank you. >>> a rescue operation under way in antarctica. the u.s. ice breaker hacked through hundr

nbc's betty nguyen is here with the details. >> good morning, yes. no one is in custody and no one has been injured. what is really turning out to be a bizarre robbery attempt. tense moments in bristol, connecticut, on monday where police say two men wearing masks and gloves forced themselves into a bank manager's home, strapping what later turned out to be a fake bomb on him. they then ordered him to drive to the credit union and empty its vault. the manager, who is also the chief financial officer of a chief financial credit union in new britain, was taken away from the scene in an ambulance after bomb squad technicians removed the suspected explosive device he was wearing. heavily armed federal, state, and local authorities responded to the scene using trucks as shields. >> we witnessed ourselves a very suspicious device. those vehicles are large enough to withstand a blast somewhat, keep a vehicle. >> back at the bank manager's home, his mother was reportedly tied to her bed with what the suspects claim was an explosive placed underneath it. afte
